The English High boys soccer team is heading to the state tournament for the first time in three years. The Bulldogs clinched the tournament berth by tying Salem 1-1.”It was an excellent accomplishment,” English coach Kerry King said. “The kids are understandably excited.”Kevin Garduno scored the Bulldogs (7-3-4) lone goal with 30 minutes remaining in the game. Murbarak Nyang fed a beautiful pass on a free kick to Garduno who was a bout eight yards from the net.Daniel Cordoba made some spectacular saves down the stretch to preserve the tie.Alex Alvarez and Ashani Nelson had strong defensive performances.Classical 2, Revere 1At Lynn, Miguel Castro scored a goal and added an assist for the Rams. Doodley Aldouvry scored the other goal. The Patriots goal actually came when Classical inadvertently scored on their own goal. Paul Buccheri and Omer Wago played excellent, filling in for two starters.Northeast 5, Tech 4At Northeast, the Tigers needed to win their final three games to qualify for the state tournament, but the Golden Knights spoiled the party. Northeast controlled this one from the start, going up 3-0 and heading into the half leading 3-2. Northeast led 5-2 before Tech battled back to within a goal.”We ran out of time,” Tech coach Fred Gallo said, adding this is the first time in six years the Tigers (5-8-1) haven’t qualified for the state tournament.”We had too many (6) one-goal losses,” he said.Richard Jones-Alas had two goals for Tech with Gustavo Rodriguez and Yerlin Guevara each contributing one. Kelley Johnson and Garrett Folger scored the Eagles goals. St. John’s is undefeated in the last five games, winning four of them. Zach Hathaway picked up an assist.Swampscott 3, Danvers 1At Swampscott, the Big Blue (8-2-4, 8-2-3 NEC South) led 2-0 at the half and 3-0 until late in the game. Kyle Taylor headed in a corner kick from Ethan Scott for the first Swampscott goal. Chris Nenshati took a through pass from Walter Morrell and parked it in the net for the second Swampscott goal and Morrell scored (unassisted) three minutes into the second half. Danvers scored with six minutes left to spoil the shutout.”This was probably some of the best soccer we’ve played since the opening game,” Swampscott coach Mike Chase said..Marblehead 2, Saugus 0At Saugus, Nick Belesis scored both goals for the Magicians (6-5-2, 5-4-2 Northeastern Conference).
