DANVERS – Despite going into last night’s game with Danvers with a 2-2 mark, the Lynn Classical football squad had only notched more than 10 points in a game once, in the opener four weeks ago against St. Mary’s.The Rams (3-2) went into double digits, aided by a solid running attack (331 yards), as well as two strong defensive plays coming at opposite moments in the game, to offset the Falcons, 19-7, at Dr. Deering Field.Classical scored early in the fourth quarter, capping off a 14-play, 80-yard drive, with the team picking up six first downs during the possession. Backs Kashawn Avery (18-122) and Cameron Smith gained valuable first downs on consecutive runs, with Smith’s going for 11 yards to the Falcons 48. Smith added a 15-yard scamper on the first play of the final quarter to spot the ball at the 11. Avery gave Classical an insurance score two plays later with a five-yard run.Yet it would the Rams defense, that while it bent, it did not break, protecting the two-touchdown lead. Danvers took over at its 39, and convwerted a third-and-five with a seven-yard pass from quarterback Greg Ladd (4-8-1-39) to receiver Cody Croft (3-24). Moments later, Ladd hit teammate T.J. Stamley for a 15-yard strike on third-and-9 to put the team at the 13.Back Eric Burgos gave the team another first down at the 3 midway through the period with a six-yard gain, then added two more to the Rams 1 on the next play. On second down, Burgos was stonewalled, and Ladd would be sacked on the next play by linemen Casey Johnson and Chevere Archer. Ladd fumbled the ball away, and the Rams ran out the clock.”The defense did it for us when it counted,” said Classical coach Tim Phelps. “We didn’t play well at first, but they came through at the biggest moments. Winning the turnover battle is big, and it’s big momentum as well. That had been killing us all year, committing turnovers of our own, and losing that edge.”Danvers (1-4) went three-and-out after the opening kickoff, and the Rams took immediate advantage. Starting at its own 11, back Gary Sisson burst though for 19 yards (14-90) to the 30. It was the beginning of a methodical running game by the Rams. Moments later, Smith picked up a first down on third-and-four to the 46. Avery picked up a pair of 12-yard carries later in the drive, and he capped off the 12-play, 89 yard drive with an eight-yard score. The Falcons then marched downfield, with what looked to be a game-tying drive. Ladd and Croft hooked up for a pair of completions, with the final one placing the ball at the Classical 33. On the first play of the second quarter, Ladd was thrown for an 11-yard loss to push Danverws back to the 29, yet Burgos broke through the Classical line on the next play, before being tackled at the 1. He would be stopped on first down, then Ladd went to the air. His pass, intended for Croft, was picked off by Avery, and the Rams took over at the 3.The Rams hurt themselves tremendously throughout the first half, and two plays illustrate that. The team had a third-and-19 at its 24, when quarterback Jasper Grassa unleashed a bullet to Smith at the Falcons 40. Smith outran the rest of the field for an apparent score, but it was nullfied due to a holding call against the squad. The team eventually punted the ball away.Danvers took over at its 43, and the Falcons couldn’t move the ball. They punted as well, except that the Rams were called for roughing-the-kicker, and that gave an automatic first down to Danvers. The Falcons scored the game-tying touchdown late in the half, with Burgos going in from the 4.”Penalties really hurt us in the first half,” said Phelps. “That’s been a big problem for us all season, and that touchdown (the 76-yarder from Jasper to Smith) is one that we’ve been practicing all year. We made the adjustments at the half, and cut down on the flags.”Classical took the lead for good on the first possession of the third period. Smith converted a fourth-and-3 from the Falcons 30 with a nine-yard gain, then
