After going through a five-day stretch that saw it upset top-ranked Everett and then lose to a tough Brockton team, the St. John’s Prep football team will step right back into the fire on Friday (7) when it visits No. 5-ranked Dracut.”These are the kind of games that we should be playing,” Prep coach Jim O’Leary said. “We are going to have to play all 44 minutes against this team, because they keep coming at you.”The Eagles (4-1) ran into a Brockton team that was mighty motivated and took advantage of two costly Prep turnovers to change a 14-7 game into a 28-7 halftime lead.”Brockton probably played the best game they have all year,” O’Leary said. “They came out ready, and that’s a credit to them. But it was a closer game than the score shows.”The task doesn’t get any easier this week against the Middies, who possess one of the most explosive offenses in the state.Dracut’s spread offense is triggered by 6-5, 229-pound senior Matt Grimard. Grimard gained experience last year in a 6-5 season and has been spectacular so far this year.O’Leary knows that defending the Middies’ up-tempo offense won’t be easy.”They are a true spread team in that they go without a huddle and do it as well as anyone,” O’Leary said. “They want to take your defensive coaches out of the game, so we have to coach up our kids and have them make the decisions on the field.”Grimard also has the ability to run. When he’s not taking off with the ball, Jonathan Rivera is usually handling the running chores.”They run 70 percent of the time,” O’Leary said. “But if you crowd the line, they can throw right over the top.”It will be the third meeting between the two teams, with the Middies winning both previous meetings.St. Mary’s at Pope JohnAt Everett on Saturday (7), the Spartans (2-2) come in on the back of a 60-point effort last week against Cathedral.Ryan Barrows was the ringleader in the victory, earning Item Offensive Player of the Week honors for his 185-yard, three-touchdown effort.
