TOPSFIELD – An uneducated fan may have looked at Masconomet’s 1-3 record and thought Bishop Fenwick was the superior team going into Friday night’s matchup. That opinion would have seemed warranted after the Crusaders orchestrated a 6:49, 14-play, 74-yard drive culminating in a two yard Chris Renzulli touchdown scamper.Well, records can be misleading, and that was the case in Topsfield as the Chieftains scored touchdowns on their first six possessions and ran their way to a 41-20 victory in their home opener.”Their record coming in was not a good representation of how good they are,” said Fenwick (2-3) coach David Woods.Masco quarterback Chris Splinter and running back Evan Bunker showed how good their team really is in its second consecutive win. The junior QB rushed for 98 yards on seven carries (14 YPC) and three touchdowns (1, 1, 37) while completing three of five passes for 38 yards.Although he totaled one fewer touchdown than his teammate, Bunker repeatedly shredded the defense. The back scored his team’s first TD on a one-yard push in the first quarter and later, in the third quarter, ran 83 yards, crisscrossing the field multiple times, for his second score. Bunker carried the ball only eight times but amassed 190 (23.8 YPC) of his squad’s 367 rushing yards.”Evan had some really great runs,” said Chieftain (2-3) coach Jim Pugh. “The guys were a little overconfident coming in that this was going to be a blowout, and that first drive woke us up. It’s nice to get another win under our belt before opening up our (Cape Ann) league schedule.”Trailing 34-6 just after halftime, Fenwick’s Dan Kennedy returned the Masco kickoff 79 yards, untouched, for a touchdown. The Chieftains reasserted themselves, and any Fenwick momentum was immediately quelled when Bunker scored his 83-yard TD on Masco’s first play of the subsequent drive.Renzulli (5-14, 110 yards) connected with junior Joe Bona (two catches, 99 yards) for a 94-yard touchdown and the Crusaders’ third and final score of the night. The quarterback rolled out to his right and heaved a perfect pass to Bona, who caught the ball over his left shoulder and raced down the sideline before being tackled into the end zone.”We can’t fault the effort,” Woods said. “Lots of times, our guys did what they were supposed to do. This is what happens when you play a team that is much better than you.”The Chieftains opened the 2008 season with three difficult road games, which resulted in a Week 1 loss to St. John’s Prep, a one-point defeat at the hands of Norton, and a 20-13 loss to Gloucester, last year’s Division 2A Super Bowl champion, before beating Lincoln-Sudbury last week.Bishop Fenwick enters a bye week and will play Swampscott, at home, in Week 7.
