NAHANT – Celebrate fall at the annual Nahant Historical Society Harvest Fair this Saturday. On Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. the Nahant Historical Society at 41 Valley Road will be holding an open house/harvest fair in conjunction with the Essex National Heritage Area’s Trails and Sails Weekend. The NHS award-winning exhibit “Nahant on the Rocks” will be open to the public. Nahant On The Rocks revisits the era when the town was home to several hotels and an amusement park, which was located at Bass Point. It also examines how businesses and industry evolved over the years on the tiny seaside hamlet and includes examples of furniture that was made locally by J.T. Wilson. Natural wonders, farming, Victorian parlors, boating and the town wharf are all highlighted in the exhibit. The exhibit is full of historic photographs that date back to the 1800s, including many of establishments and homes that are no longer standing.Raffle tickets will be for sale and there will be a silent auction, which includes artwork and craft items. The NHS gift shop will be open throughout the day and some of the items for sale include commemorative 150th anniversary books.Other great gifts from the NHS include a limited edition pressed glass cup plate depicting “The Eagle”- a hand pump fire engine that was used in Nahant from 1843 to 1871. In the 1800s tea was served in cups without handles and poured into saucers to cool. Tea was sipped from the saucer and the cup was put on cup plates to protect the table. Nahant resident Gerald Butler designed the Eagle cup plate and only 500 were made. The society also has 100 percent cotton afghans depicting historical Nahant sites available along with Nahant themed postcards, bookmarks and note cards for sale.
