It was a battle of state championship programs on the golf course Monday at Gannon Golf Club in Lynn as St. John’s Prep and St. Mary’s locked horns.In a close match throughout, it was the Eagles, perennial contenders for the Division 1 crown, who were able to best the home-standing Spartans (a former Division 3 champion), 224-227.”It was a good, close match throughout,” Prep coach Larry O’Neill said.The Eagles (7-0) got a 2-over par 36 from Emilio Bardini to lead the way. Nick Velonis, Nick Maccario and Nick McLaughlin all carded rounds of 37 to bolster the Prep’s cause.Matt O’Hare was medalist in the match as his even par 34 led the Spartans. Fenwick’s Lauren McHugh supplied the game-winner with 6:30 remaining and goalie Stacy Landry hung tough in net to preserve the win. Fenwick is 6-0.Lynnfield 4, N’port 1At Lynnfield, the Pioneers’ (6-1) Meriam Gehret continued her stellar play, scoring four times, including a first-half hat trick, that gives her 14 goals and three assists in seven games.”Everybody was doing their job and the offense was relentless inside the circles,” Lynnfield coach Mamie Reardon said. “The goals Meriam was scoring were like ones you’d see in a college game.”Mary Krieger had a pair of assists and Lisa Neal added a helper.VOLLEYBALLSt. Mary’s 3, Weston 0At Lynn, the Spartans (3-3) won 25-7, 25-15 and 25-19.
