FOXBOROUGH – Usually, when an opponent mouths off the week prior to a Patriots game, the Pats make him pay.How many times did former Indianapolis Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt have to learn to shut his yapper? How about last year, when Anthony Smith of the Pittsburgh Steelers guaranteed a victory?Historically, in the Bill Belichick era, the Patriots have not been kind to mouthy opponents.Of course, historically, in the Bill Belichick era, the Patriots have also had Tom Brady. They don’t this year.So when Joey Porter of the Miami Dolphins all but guaranteed a victory over the Pats this week, and after all the predictable outrage over it had settled, the smart money said that the Patriots – so good at playing the “lack of respect” card, would win easily. Not only that, they’d drop-kick Porter through the goalposts en route to stomping the winless, and – until yesterday – hapless Dolphins into the ground.Porter said what most NFL teams are undoubtedly thinking ? but keeping to themselves: that Matt Cassel is not Tom Brady and that there’s no way any self-respecting NFL defense should go into a game with the same respect/fear for a lifelong backup. He also said it would be nice for the Dolphins to come up here and get their first win. However, Porter says that every week ? even though every week, for the last year, the Dolphins have lost. While yesterday’s 38-13 defeat at the hands of these same Dolphins wasn’t all Cassel’s fault, as they used to say in the Shake ‘n Bake commercials, he helped. He couldn’t get anything going, and neither could the Patriots. For his part, Porter spoke afterward like a man who was immeasurably happy his words didn’t come back to bite him.”The big thing is that we came out with a win,” he said. “It’s not really about me.”But he was a big part of it. The linebacker had three sacks – including one at the very beginning of the game that perhaps set the tone for what turned into a long afternoon – and forced a fumble.Yet at the same time, Porter was just a part of an overall afternoon of unexpected dominance on the part of the Dolphins. Running back Ronnie Brown ran for three touchdowns and threw an option pass for a fourth ? and beat the Patriots on three separate occasions on the same gadget play on which he took the direct snap with quarterback Chad Pennington lined up as a flanker. Twice he ran it in for the score; and the other time he rolled out wide and passed for the TD.All of which left Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss shaking his head in disbelief afterward.”I’ve been watching football a long time,” he said, “and I’ve really never seen the Miami Dolphins offense have all these gadgets and stuff like that.”You have to tip your hat off to the whole team,” he said. “They made some key plays on defense, offense and special teams.”Moss just about came out and said the Dolphins wanted the game more than the Patriots.”We left a lot of football out there today,” he said. “I’m not taking away from the Dolphins or their coach (however). I looked on the other side of the field and saw how much this game meant to them. They dumped water on the coach’s head and stuff like that. That was very disappointing to look on the other side of the field seeing that.”Seeing the way the Dolphins performed out there, they just wanted it more,” Moss said. “I guess that’s something crazy for me to say, but I was out there, and I could really see it.”
