FRAMINGHAM – It was a tale of two halves for the Tech football team Friday in an 18-0 loss to Marian at Bowditch Field in Framingham. The Tigers (1-1) were all business in the first half, getting the ball inside the Marian 15-yard line three times, but coming away empty-handed each time. The missed opportunities proved costly when the Mustangs came to life in the second half, scoring 18 unanswered points for the win. After forcing a three-and-out on Marian to start the game, Tech got the ball at its own 29 and marched to the Marian nine. The key play in the drive was a 34-yard pass from Jordan Rucker to Joe Brady. The Tigers, on a fourth-and-four from the nine, came up short by a couple of inches on a measurement. The Mustangs got the ball back, but could only muster 11 yards before being forced to punt. Once again, Tech was in a good position to make some noise. The Tiger made it back to the Marian six, but on second-and-goal, Rucker threw an interception. It looked like Marian was starting to pick up some steam when quarterback Nick Thompson connected on a couple of passes to move the ball 50 yards downfield, but the football gods were smiling on Tech. Marian fumbled on the handoff at the Tech 14 and Josh Cheever was there to recover the ball. The defensive save went to waste, however, because Rucker got intercepted again. Fortunately for the Lynn team, Marian couldn’t do anything with the gift and the half ended, 0-0. Marian only mustered 70 yards of offense in the first half, 64 in the air and six on the ground. Tech, on the other hand, had 172 yards total offense and eight first downs before the half. The Tigers hit another bump in the road at the start of the first half when Rucker (5-13 for 91 yards) underthrew receiver Joe Brady (4 catches for 83 yards) for his third pick of the night. The defensive play fired up the Mustangs and quarterback Thompson (12-for-26, 168 yards), who started to connect with Miguel Ortiz, who ended up reeling in six passes for 113 yards. Marian scored its first touchdown in the third quarter on a 68-yard drive that culminated with a Thompson six-yard touchdown pass to Alex Jursek. The two-point conversion failed.Tech went three-and-out on its next possession and Marian promptly marched 55 yards and scored on a two-yard run by Thompson. The conversion failed, but Marian held a 12-0 lead. Marian scored its final touchdown on a five-play, 56-yard drive that ended in an Ortiz 34-yard run. Tech had one final crack at the end zone, but the drive fizzled on the 14.”We could have taken control early, but we just didn’t finish the drives,” Tech coach Gary Sverker said. “The interception in the end zone was a big momentum shift.”Sverker said he thought his team played well overall, but Marian made the big plays.”Ortiz is a big-play kid and he made the big catches,” Sverker said. “He came as advertised.Tech’s Gerrad Fairweather had 10 carries for 55 yards. Steven Caisse had 11 carries for 49 yards and Mario Bazile had 12 carries for 41 yards. Tech plays O’Bryant High of Boston Thursday at Manning Bowl. Marian is 2-0.
