LYNN – If you like high-scoring games, this was not the game for you. However, if you wanted to see 22 players give everything they had on the turf of Manning Field, then this was the game for you to watch, as English and Classical played to a scoreless tie. Both teams had many opportunities to score, only to be shut down by the other team’s defense.Classical now has a record of 1-3-1, while English has a 1-3-2 record. You could not have asked the players to work any harder. Both teams substituted freely.Ram coach Marcy Durgin was optimistic before the game, saying, “We have practiced well this week and I feel that we have a really good chance of knocking off English.”Ed McNeil, the Bulldog coach, said, “We are coming off a good game against Beverly, and we should be ready for Classical.”When your offense is not clicking, your only hope to score is for the other team’s defense to crack. Last night, this did not happen. The goalies and sweepers on both teams were the stars of the evening. For Classical, keeper Sochitta Men, a senior playing her first year of soccer, was outstanding. Recruited from the basketball team by Durgin, she is getting better with each game she plays. She kept everything neat and tidy in the six-yard box as she cleaned up everything English threw at her.In front of her, shutting down the English attack before it could get going was sweeper Kelly Devany. Her clearing kicks to the wings were perfect. At the other end of the field, English junior keeper Brittany Goulet was pitching her fourth shutout of the season and the fifteenth in her three years as keeper for the Bulldogs. She knows how to play the angles on the shooters, which only comes with experience. In front of her is the English sweeper, Shawna Henry, who is as good a sweeper as you can find on the North Shore. Her booming high clears kept the Classical strikers at bay.For a real soccer fan, this was a great game to watch. Even though the final score was 0-0, it was a thrill to be there.
