LYNN – In the third annual city soccer tourney, the St. Mary’s girls were trying to make it three in a row. And they achieved just that with a 1-0 victory over English on Saturday. Before the game, Spartan coach Jim Foley was upbeat. He said, “We are all healthy and ready to play. Our defense is working well, especially the sweeper Stephanie Mowry and the keeper, Megan Brickley.”English coach Ed McNeil was lamenting the injury bug. His top gun, junior Megan Forti, is out for the year. He said, “She tore her ACL and will miss her entire junior year but will be back for her senior season. Her duties this year are as scorekeeper and helping me coach. Stephanie Breault will miss the next few games. She injured her foot in practice on Thursday. She will probably miss this week.”English has a defense that can rival the Spartans in ability and intensity. The sweeper, Shawna Henry, and the keeper, Brittany Goulet, are a combination that is hard to beat. The only difference between the two teams is Amanda Webster. Right now, she is probably the best soccer player on the North Shore. The only goal of the game came with one minute remaining in the first half. A drop pass from striker, Molly Carey to Webster was dead center in the middle of the field about 7 yards beyond the arc. Webster one-timed the pass and put a laser beam over the head of English keeper Brittany Goulet. At halftime the score was Spartans 1, Bulldogs 0.The second half looked like an instant replay of the first half. Both teams had some outstanding chances but the sweepers and the keepers on both sides rose to the occasion and stifled every shot for the remainder of the game. The MVP awards of a backpack and a ball selected by Ed Mc Neil went to Shawna Henry, who by far was the best player on the English team Saturday afternoon. Coach Jim Foley selected Amanda Webster. Now St. Mary’s takes home its third trophy and gets ready to go to Fenwick on Wednesday to meet the Crusaders.
