St. John’s Prep defeated Xavier High School of Middletown, Conn., on Saturday in the 20th annual Furstenberg Cup. The Eagles won their fourth straight in the yearly series between the schools.St. John’s led 2-0 at the half before Xavier scored to cut the lead to a goal. The Eagles wrapped things up with 10 minutes left when Kelley Johnson headed in a corner kick from Foti Andreo.Alex Veloz and Owen Fox provided the tallies for St. John’s in the opening frame. Steven Pasinski and Pat O’Keefe split time in net for the Eagles.St. John’s (1-0-0) plays Cambridge next Saturday morning at 10 in Danvers.G’ster 1, Malden 1At Malden, Chris Peritore provided the tying goal for Gloucester on Saturday in a defensive struggle.With his team trailing 1-0 early in the second half, Gloucester’s Frank Taormina found Peritore in front of the net, and Peritore knotted the score from 15 yards out.Gloucester coach James Cook said each team had a number of scoring chances during the game, but neither could capitalize more than once.Gloucester (1-0-1) was without starters Massimo Delisi and Frank Freedman, out with injury and illness, respectively.Gloucester plays at Saugus on Tuesday.BOYS CROSS COUNTRYSt. John’s in Clipper RelaysSt. John’s Prep had two top-5 finishes in the 9th Annual Clipper Relays, held Saturday morning at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport.The race is a 3-by-2-mile relay, with teams of three athletes each splitting the 6-mile run.Brian Keiran, Julian Gallo and Mike Masse (31:09) finished fourth overall for the Eagles. A.J. Rossi, Tim Murtagh and Ben Halpin (31:19) placed fifth.In all, 172 trifectas from various schools competed in the men’s event. A women’s race was also held.The Eagles open their regular season on Sept. 23 against Xaverian at Franklin Park in Dorchester.
