SWAMPSCOTT – The Swampscott Sox will try and extend the North Shore Baseball League season another day when they play Peabody tonight at 8 p.m. at Twi Field.Champions won Monday night’s game, 12-7, at Swampscott and in doing so, took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven final series. If the Sox can win tonight, the seventh game will be back in Swampscott Wednesday (7:30).The Sox held the lead briefly in the first inning thanks to a Steve Carr (St. Mary’s/Franklin Pierce) two-run home run, but Champions blew the game open with a seven-run second inning. Zach Keenan (St. John’s Prep/Boston College) delivered the killer shot that inning when he hit a grand slam over the right-center fence. Carr had three hits, a single, double and the two-run homer. Jason Tarasuik also brought his bat, hitting a solo home-run and an RBI single.Peabody pitcher Brian Marshall picked up the complete game win. Marshall, who played at Danvers High and Southern Maine, also went the distance earlier in the series when Peabody won 1-0. Nick Santa Barbara got the start for Swampscott. He went two innings, with Fred Cole going the final five in relief. Swampscott closed the gape to 10-7 in the sixth and had the tying run at the plate, but the rally fizzled.”We kicked the ball around a little bit, but they also hit the ball hard,” Swampscott manager Joe Caponigro said. “Any time you score seven runs, you think you have a shot at winning, but the way we played defensively, we have no one to blame.”
