SWAMPSCOTT – Having been to the North Shore Baseball League finals in 14 of the past 16 years, the Swampscott Sox are used to playing well under postseason pressure. But this year’s version of the perennial power has been led by a group of talented young players along with a core group of veterans. On Tuesday, the Sox got the 2008 postseason under way in perfect style as Joe Breen struck out 10, walked one and allowed only five hits to help lead Swampscott to a 7-0 win over Beverly in game one of the team’s best-of-five series.”Joey was on his game,” Swampscott manager Joe Caponigro said. “He threw all three of his pitches for strikes and we got some timely hits.”The Sox, who went 22-2 in the regular season to earn their seventh regular-season title in eight years, started fast against the No. 8-seeded Brewers (10-14-1) and never let up.”We have a lot of good young players and they have really been complemented by our good veterans,” Caponigro said.Swampscott (23-2) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second against Keene State’s Jamie Wentworth. Jared Wiedenroth singled with one out and moved up when Angelo Salustri walked.Ryan Radabaugh followed with a bouncer to short that hit off the lip of the infield grass and sailed over Danny Mello’s head to score Wiedenroth for a 1-0 lead. Chris Oram followed with a walk before Tony Nicosia’s fielder’s choice got Salustri across.Beverly put a pair of runners on against Breen in the third, but he got Matt Mello on a grounder to third to end the inning. The Sox then added to their lead in the bottom of the inning thanks to control trouble for Wentworth.Doug Spofford, Steve Carr, Jason Tarasuik and Wiedenroth drew four consecutive walks to increase the gap to 3-0. Salustri then hit into a 5-2-3 double play, which erased Carr at the plate and gave Wentworth a window to get out of the jam.But a wild pitch with Radabaugh at the plate allowed Tarasuik to race home and give Swampscott a commanding 4-0 lead.”We took advantage of the free passes they gave us to put a little pressure on them,” Caponigro said. Those four runs were pretty much all Breen needed on this night.Except for two stray pitches that hit Beverly catcher Trevor Manzi, Breen was in complete control. He struck out at least one batter in all but two innings and stranded eight Brewers on the basepaths.Swampscott added a run in the fourth on a Nicosia sacrifice fly before the Sox defense, namely from left fielder Oram, took center stage. The Lynn English grad and current UMass-Boston starter single-handedly took care of Beverly’s chance to rally in the fifth. After Steve Zernari and Danny Mello reached on singles, Eric Pelletier followed with a hit to left.Oram fielded the ball cleanly and came up firing, throwing a strike to Carr at the plate to retire Zernari. One batter later, Matt Mello hit a bullet to left that looked like it was going over Oram’s head. But he reached up at the last second and made a sno-cone catch to end the inning.Wiedenroth took care of the rest of Swampscott’s scoring in the bottom of the inning when he ripped a 2-run homer to left with one out to give the Sox a 7-0 lead. From there, it was all Breen as he worked two hitless innings in the sixth and seventh to seal the win.
