Verizon Communications workers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island voted by 95 percent Friday to authorize their union negotiating committee to call for a strike, if necessary, when their labor contract was set to expire on Saturday.”Unless Verizon comes to its senses soon, more than 9,000 workers in New England will strike to defend the good jobs and reliable services our communities need,” said Myles Calvey, business manager of IBEW Local 2222 and chairman of the T-6 Council. “It appears Verizon has adopted a new business model that no longer values the contribution of its hard working employees. Our members are sick of management’s disrespect for their jobs and the needs of our customers. We won’t stand for it.”The workers are united in seven IBEW local unions and part of the System Council T-6 that negotiates with Verizon management. The T-6 Council members are comprised of several locals including IBEW Local 2322 along the North Shore.Paul Feeney, spokesman for the T-6 Council in Boston, said a march and rally are planned for Thursday at Verizon’s New England headquarters at 185 Franklin St. in Boston.
