REVERE – A half dozen programs will hold activities for local youth this summer thanks in part to $18,000 raised by Revere High School graduates last fall. The first annual Caring Alumni Supporting The Learning and Enrichment of Students (CASTLES) gathered donations through a gala event that brought residents across the city together to sample local cuisine.Class of 1973 members will repeat that endeavor again on Nov. 1 when they host the second annual “Taste of Revere” at Suffolk Downs. Class members recently met with Revere After School Partnership organizers to discuss scholarships for children attending summer camps affiliated with the Partnership.Twenty-five proposals were submitted and approved allowing many children who met the criteria to attend a summer camp cost-free or at a student discount. The participating programs include 21st Century Program, Revere Parks and Recreation Department, After School Safety & Knowledge, Massachusetts General Hospital’s Revere Youth Zone and the For Kids Only After School and Summer program. These programs strive to educate, explore, challenge and develop children to their greatest potential through activities including swimming lessons, cultural events, field trips, sports and tutoring in math and reading, all in a safe environment. The Partnership also works to provide safe and productive activities for public school students during the academic year. School officials hope to expand after school programs in conjunction with plans to extend school days initially at the Whelan and Garfield schools.Their goal is to allow students to go from the classroom to school-based extended day programs and into after school programs, run, in part, by senior volunteers.
