The Swampscott American Legion team needed a win in the biggest possible way on Tuesday against Middleton. And despite a rain delay that pushed the start back, the Mariners did, in fact, get off the snide.Swampscott used a 3-run fifth inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit and then added two more runs in the sixth to take a 6-2 win at the Forest Avenue Fields.”It had been a rough 10 days for us and we needed a win any way we could get it,” Swampscott manager Jeff Newhall said.Swampscott (2-5) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth on Chris Cameron’s solo homer. But the visitors rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the fifth.The Mariners charged back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three times with two outs. Hunter Gordon was hit by a pitch before Doug Shribman launched a towering homer to give Swampscott the lead back. Justin Mitchell went yard moments later to up the gap to 4-2.Swampscott put the game away with two in the sixth on RBI hits from Shane Coffey and Steve Moran. Shribman started, going the first four innings and striking out six. Mike Scanlon got the win, striking out five over the final three innings.N’Port 1, Danvers 0At Newburyport, right-hander Kyle James was outstanding, allowing one hit over six innings. The problem was that the one hit was a solo homer by Cape Ann League MVP Tim Holland to open the fourth inning, which provided all the offense in the game.Danvers was held to only three hits, two of them off the bat of Tom Marini.Results from Tuesday’s Methuen at Gautreau game were unable to be obtained at press time.
