BEVERLY – Things were firmly in control for the Lynn 13-year-old Babe Ruth all-star team on Monday at Cooney Field. Lynn led Beverly 6-3 through four innings.Baseball, however, is a funny game and Beverly climbed off the canvas to shockingly eliminate Lynn in two games, 7-6, thanks to Ben Maxner’s game-winning 2-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning.”We definitely had some talent and I thought we’d at least make some noise here,” Lynn manager Mike Mageary said. “I think we got a little complacent with a 6-1 lead.”Lynn’s woes were helped along by stellar relief pitching from Eric Messina, who took over for Dan Turner in a 6-3 hole. Messina held Lynn to two hits in the final three innings, giving Beverly a chance to storm from behind.”I think that the kids thought they could coast,” Mageary said. “But the coaches kept telling them in the dugout that they had to keep going. But they just seemed to be going through the motions.”Lynn came out of the gate flying, striking for three first-inning runs against Turner.A one out walk to Chris Coito ignited the offense. Shaddai Fernandez’s two-out double was followed by a balk that scored Coito and moved Fernandez to third. P.J. Dorsey then doubled, scoring Fernandez for a 2-0 lead. Joey Field’s infield single upped the lead to 3-0.Beverly rallied for a run in the bottom of the first when Brendan Flaherty singled and went to second on an error. He then stole third and scored on an errant throw into left field.Lynn came back with two runs in the second. Gabe Skelton walked and stole second before going to third on Justin O’Blenes’ bunt single. An error on the play scored Skelton and sent O’Blenes to second. Kyle Devin upped the margin to 5-1 with a two-out double that brought O’Blenes across. The lead increased to 6-1 in the third when Lynn found some two-out offense. Joey Rose reached on an infield single and stole second. He scored on a double by pinch hitter Chris Narducci.Beverly crept back within four in the bottom of the third on Ryan Shipp’s RBI groundout to Fernandez on the mound. But with Fernandez having worked three relatively quiet innings, there was no inkling of a comeback.”The thing that these kids have to learn is that they have to continue to push it with a big lead,” Mageary said. “And we tried to do that, but we couldn’t get the hits.”Beverly cut into the lead again in the fourth when Dan Brown doubled with one out. Cam Rogers tried to score from second on the play but Devin’s relay throw from short gunned him down. A bad throw trying to get Brown at third allowed him to score.Messina took over for Turner in the fifth and shut down Lynn’s offense for the first time all game. Beverly then made it a one-run game on Brandon Sungy’s 2-run single with two outs that scored Messina and Kenny Pierce. After a scoreless sixth for Lynn, Fernandez departed in favor of Franklin Nunez. A leadoff walk to Andrew Irving gave Beverly life. Rogers followed with a single before Brown went down swinging.Maxner then played the role of hero as he ripped a shot to the fence in right-center, scoring Irving and Rogers to make it 7-6.Lynn got the tying run into scoring position in the seventh, but Messina struck out Rose to end the game.
