HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity College senior RHP/UT Chandler Barnard (Lubbock, Texas) and senior RHP Tim Kiely (Swampscott) were each named to the 2008 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III All-American First Team, while Kiely also graced the D3Baseball.com All-American First Team, and Bantam junior RHP Jeremiah Bayer (Greenfield) was selected to the ABCA Division III All-American Second Team.Kiely was also chosen as the Division III New England Pitcher of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA), and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), and as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Pitcher of the Year.Junior tri-captain and catcher Sean Killeen (Greenfield), junior 2B Ryan Piacentini (Portland, Maine), sophomore 1B Kent Graham (Longmeadow) and sophomore OF James Wood (Windham, NH) joined Barnard, Bayer, and Kiely on the All-NEIBA First Team, while Barnard, Graham, Kiely, Killeen, and Wood all made the ECAC Division III All-New England First Team, and Bayer and Piacentini were selected to the ECAC Division III All-New England Second Team. Trinity senior tri-captain RHP Michael Regan (West Roxbury) was chosen for the All-NEIBA Second Team. The All-NESCAC First Team included Barnard, Bayer, Graham, Kiely, Killeen, and Wood and the All-NESCAC Second Team included Piacentini and Regan. In addition, Bantam head coach Bill Decker (Simsbury, Conn.) was selected as the ABCA Division III New England, the NEIBA, the ECAC Division III New England, and the NESCAC Coach of the Year, and Kiely and senior SS Thomas DiBenedetto (Fort Myers, Fla.) were selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.The Trinity baseball squad reached unprecedented heights this spring with a best-ever record of 45-1, including a second New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship title, a third NCAA Division III Regional Championship crown, and the first NCAA Division III National Team Championship title in College history in any sport. The Bantams breezed through the NESCAC East Division with a 12-0 mark and the regular season with a 34-0 record, and broke the Division III record for fastest start and longest winning streak with 44 wins to start the season. Trinity recovered from its first loss of the year, 4-3, to Johns Hopkins on the final day of the Division III World Series to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a national title-clinching 5-4 triumph over Johns Hopkins in the finals. Trinity finished ranked No. 1 in both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), and D3Baseball.com National Polls.Kiely, just two years removed from Tommy John surgery on his right arm, is a two-time All-NESCAC, All-New England, and All-American selection and a repeat honoree as the NESCAC Pitcher of the Year. This spring, Kiely appeared in 13 games with 12 starts and posted an 11-1 record (new College record for wins) with seven complete games, two shutouts, 107 strikeouts (1st in NESCAC, 5th in nation) against just three walks (lowest in nation, new College record of 0.28 per 9 inn.), a 1.48 ERA (2nd in NESCAC, 6th in nation), and 80 hits allowed in 97 innings pitched. Against Tufts in 2007, Kiely tossed the first perfect game in Trinity baseball history with nine strikeouts in a seven-inning 4-0 win. Kiely was selected as the NESCAC Player of the Week once this spring and named to the NCAA Regional and National All-Tournament squads. He was chosen by the Anaheim Angels early this month in the 27th round of the MLB Draft. An alum of Swampscott High School, Kiely graduated from Trinity in May with a degree in political science. He is the son of Leslie and Paul Kiely.
