LYNN – Lynn Tech was the superior team for six of its eight innings against Presentation of Mary Academy Friday afternoon.Unfortunately for the Tigers, in the two innings the Panthers performed their best, they scored 10 runs, including five in the eighth en route to a 14-9 victory.”We always tend to have one or two bad innings,” said Tech (3-12) coach Beth Mercaldi. “It always comes back to hurt us.”Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the first, lead off hitters Erika Tavarez and Noelia Mateo worked walks and moved up a base each on Courtney Walters ground out.Three pitches later, Kristina Hynes drove counterpart Chris Byron’s pitch deep into the right-center gap.A misplay by the centerfielder turned a RBI single into a three-run homer and the Tigers led by two after one.Hynes only allowed two hits in six innings, but her search for the strike zone gave her and her team fits. The righty walked six and hit a batter in PMA’s five-run second and the Panthers (6-8) quickly recaptured the lead at 6-3.”She’s normally pretty good. Her control has been much better this year so today was a little disappointing,” Mercaldi said.”The walks today were not typical of her this season.”Hynes walked twelve in her outing, but made up for the free passes by keeping the opposition’s hits to a minimum and provided her team with the opportunity for a comeback.Tech began chiseling into its deficit in the fourth.Sadelis Feliz singled to begin the inning, maneuvered her way to third on two pass balls and touched home plate on Carissa Thomas’ RBI single. With one out in the fifth, Hynes connected on her second hit, a single, and eventually scored on Stacya Contreras’ infield single two batters later. On the play, the Panther’s second baseman attempted to get Contreras out at first but her throw went array and Feliz scored her second run in as many innings to even the game at 6.Byron led off the top of the sixth for PMA with her second walk and put her team back atop when she scored on a passed ball later in the inning. The Panther’s lead was short-lived.The Tigers compiled a three-run sixth highlighted by Walter’s two-run triple she blasted over PMA’s left fielder.Walter’s scored on Hynes’ third hit to make the score 9-7 in Tech’s favor. The excitement of the Tiger’s comeback lasted until the top of seventh. Byron hit a two-run double down the leftfield line to even the score and then shutdown the Tech lineup in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.”Chris pitched well, especially considering she’s coming off a sprained ankle,” said Panther coach Steve Stankus.”For us, it was a good game. We’re a little beat up.”We’re not that good of a team but we always try hard.”
