SAUGUS – Three firefighters who were part of last month’s daring rescue of a disabled woman from the second floor window of a burning building will be honored for their heroic act during the Celtics game Sunday.Captains Thomas Nolan, Don Shea and firefighter William Cross will be recognized as a trio of “Heroes Among Us.”Established in 1997, the Celtics Heroes Among Us program honors individuals who have made an overwhelming impact on the lives of others. That is an apt description of what Nolan, Shea and Cross did.On April 24, a call came in for a house fire at 483 Central St. Nolan, who is the head of the Fire Prevention Unit, was in the area and the first to arrive on scene. Without turnout gear or oxygen Nolan made the snap decision to enter the house, which was filled with heavy black smoke. Inside, he made his way to the second floor where he found Ida Battley, a double amputee huddled in a smoke filled room.Cross, who was off duty, happened to be working a landscaping job next door. When he heard Nolan was inside, Cross, along with Shea, who was the first company to arrive on the scene, put up a ladder under the window where Nolan and Battley were.Cross, in shorts and a t-shirt, scrambled up the ladder and over the sill to help Nolan lift Battley over the sill while Shea took her down to safety.Fire Chief James Blanchard said while he is thrilled Cross, Shea and Nolan, who was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation, are being honored, he is quick to point out they are but three of many who helped save Battley that day.”The good thing is I’m thrilled they are being recognized but the downside is there were a whole bunch of firefighters that played a huge role,” he said. “There were the guys on the hose lines that kept the fire back giving them time to get out, which they just barely did. Right after they got out, that whole window was in flames.”Blanchard said when he told the men they and their wives were invited not only to the playoff game, but also to a private tour of the Celtics’ front office, they each suggested other men that should go.That said, Blanchard said everyone is excited, particularly since the recognition comes during the playoffs. At each home game the Celtics have taken time to honor a Good Samaritan, military personnel or a member of public safety with a presentation on the legendary parquet floor, but this is no ordinary home game. For the first time since the 1980s the Celtics have been in the run for the NBA Championship.”Sunday will either be game seven of this series or game one of the next series,” he said. “This is a nationally televised event. It’s really a thrill.”
