LYNN – When used correctly, revenge can become quite a good motivator. On Tuesday at Fraser Field, Lynn Tech was trying to use that emotion against North Shore Tech, the only team from the Commonwealth Conference’s Small division to beat the Tigers. After getting in an early 4-1 hole to the Bulldogs, Tech climbed off the canvas and scored five unanswered runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead and an eventual 6-5 victory.”I told the guys that if they won, they could end up in first place,” Tech coach Yuri Sanchez said. “That was the team that had beat us in the lower division and we had to beat them.”It took a while for Sanchez’s charges to get going as the visitors jumped on Tech starter Leury Peguero early, scoring twice in the opening inning.David St. Pierre led off the game with a single and moved to second when Ben Dorra was hit by a pitch. Catcher J.J. Navas, who was a thorn in Tech’s side all day, then picked up the first of his three hits with a single to center that scored St. Pierre.Ryan Mahan brought Dorra in to make it 2-0 with a fly ball to left before Peguero retired the next two batters to end the inning.Tech (10-3) had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the first when Mahan walked Jose Rios and Joan Mota, but rallied back to strike out Justin Morgan, Peguero and Mikey Lara. After a scoreless second, North Shore (8-6) tacked another run on to its lead in the third. Dorra was hit by a pitch and swiped second. Navas then singled to right, scoring Dorra to make it 3-0.The Tigers clawed right back in the bottom half when Rios walked and stole second in front of Mota, who collected the first of his three hits and two RBI with a single up the middle.”Joan is a great candidate for MVP of the league and he showed why (Tuesday),” Sanchez said.North Shore got that run right back in the fourth when Joel D’Ambrosio reached second on a throwing error and scored on back-to-back wild pitches by Peguero that made it 4-1.Up to that point, Tech had only one hit against Mahan, who was able to pitch around bouts of wildness. But in the fifth, the Tigers finally went on the prowl.A walk to No. 9 batter Mike Leone was followed by a passed ball that put him at second. Mahan struck out Rios but Mota came through with a single to right that cut the Bulldog lead to 4-2.After Morgan popped out to first, Peguero bounced a single off the mound to keep the inning alive. An intentional walk to Lara preceded a wild pitch that scored Mota to make it 4-3.Mahan walked Randy Pimental to re-load the bases for a slumping Osvaldo Mercado. But the Tech right fielder came up with the game’s biggest hit, a single to right, that scored Peguero and Lara to give Tech a 5-4 lead and knock Mahan out of the game.”He’s been slumping,” Sanchez said of Mercado. “So we sent him down to the JVs to get some swings and he comes up with the big hit.”Tech added an insurance run in the sixth against reliever St. Pierre. And that run proved to be big in the seventh when St. Pierre scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-5. Navas tried to go from first to third on the play and was thrown out by Morgan. Peguero then got Mahan on a popup to the mound to end the game.
