With a 10-9 win over archrival Xaverian, the St. John’s boys lacrosse team has put itself in a position to at least take home a share of the Catholic Conference title this season. The Prep (12-2) will win the conference outright if it can defeat Malden Catholic at home on Thursday afternoon.The win came on the heels of a great second-half defensive effort. After taking a 7-4 lead in the first half, the Eagles battled in the fourth quarter with the visiting Hawks. After Xaverian tied the game at eight, St. John’s managed to gain the lead at 9-8 and then again at 10-9 with 6:21 remaining. St. John’s was able to put together a defensive show that lasted a lacrosse eternity to seal the win.For St. John’s, John Jennings and Garrett Campbell both recorded four goals and an assist. Also scoring for the Prep were Mark Scalise and Tucker Garfield.Also playing big for the Eagles was goalie Nick Valenti, who had two key saves in the final six minutes.
