LYNN – The Lynn English baseball team might be young, but these Bulldogs are growing by the minute. And on Monday at Fraser Field, English took a big step in that maturation process.Roberto Reyes’ 2-run single off Winthrop ace Matt Moore with one out in the bottom of the seventh was the difference as the Bulldogs claimed the 5-4 walkoff victory.”This is a crazy game sometimes,” English coach Joe Caponigro said. “We tell the kids all the time to put the ball in play because you never know what’s going to happen.”That point was no more clearly illustrated then with one out in the seventh and Alex Fiste standing on first. Esteban Paula hit a routine grounder to short, which should have started a game-ending double play, but the ball was booted, allowing Fiste to reach third and Paula second.Moore then intentionally walked Jonathan Surrette to load the bases for the English catcher, who had already tagged him for a 2-run homer in the first inning.Reyes didn’t wait long to find a pitch he liked as he laced Moore’s first offering into right. Fiste scored easily and Paula came flying around third to slide home safely just ahead of Chris Carew’s throw and Will Milano’s tag.”What can you say about Roberto,” Caponigro said. “It’s all about timely hitting.”The final rally made a winner out of Surrette, who gutted out seven innings against a good hitting team on a night when he didn’t have his best stuff.”That was a real good job from Jonathan. He gave us everything he had,” Caponigro said.Moore wasn’t too bad either, despite losing his first decision of the year, holding English to seven hits and three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.”That was the first time I’d seen him pitch and he is a heck of a pitcher,” Caponigro said. “That team can really swing the bat, and they played really well.”Winthrop (9-3, 6-3 Northeastern Conference) drew first blood against Surrette. Chris Beranger doubled with one out in the first and came around to score on Chris Carew’s two-out single, his 18th RBI of the season.English (6-3, 5-2) retaliated in the bottom of the inning. After Moore struck out the first two men, Surrette singled before Reyes tagged a curveball well over the left-field fence to make it 2-1.The Vikings drew back even in the second thanks to an Al Petrilli double and a pair of errors. English grabbed the lead back in the third when Paula walked with one out and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw. Surrette brought him across with a sacrifice fly.Winthrop tied the game in the fourth when Moore was plunked with two outs. He stole second and third without contest and scored on Beranger’s infield single. The Vikings went back in front in the fifth. Cory Collins walked with one out and came all the way around when Ricky Boudrow doubled to make it 4-3.English had a chance to tie in the fifth when Surrette went from first to third on another errant pickoff throw with two outs. But there he stayed when Reyes chopped out to first to end the inning.
