SWAMPSCOTT – A Peabody man faces a myriad of charges after slamming into a parked Swampscott police cruiser Thursday night.Michael Carvalho, 30, 12 Lowe St., Peabody, was charged with operating under the influence of drugs, operating as to endanger, disorderly conduct and leaving the scene of accident with property damage.According to Detective Sgt. Tim Cassidy, a police cruiser that was responding to a call was parked in front of 9 Paradise Road when a black Ford Taurus struck the rear of the cruiser.”The operator tried to flee,” he said. “He revved the engine up to try to get away. Officer Brian Wilson yelled at him to turn the car off and he complied.”Cassidy said there was heavy damage to the rear driver’s side of the police vehicle and it had to be taken out of service.”There is more than $1,000 in damage,” he said.Cassidy said a second person in the vehicle fled the scene on foot.According to Cassidy, Marblehead Police Sgt. Donald Decker, who is a drug recognition expert, was instrumental in the investigation.”He conducted an investigation and determined the operator was under the influence of drugs,” Cassidy said.Karen Dawley, who was speaking on behalf of the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, said Carvalho was released on $5,000 bail on Thursday night but he defaulted and did not appear in court Friday morning as scheduled.”A default warrant has been issued,” she said.Carvalho is no stranger to police on the North Shore. He was arrested in July 2003 for domestic assault and battery and was arrested last month for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
