Last Saturday, enthusiastic anglers crowded the shore hoping to land a trophy trout during traditional opening day trout fishing tournament at Sluice Pond.Seasonable weather prevailed, contributing to the successful event, sponsored by the Lynn Fish and Game Protective Association. Finicky trout were responsive to most popular bait offerings, including meal worms, power bait, and night cawlers, with an occasional trout being caught while trolling a favorite lure or fly.An estimated 100-plus anglers fished from both banks and from boats, canoes, and kayaks. About two dozen fish, mostly rainbow trout, were weighed in during the morning – not very many considering the hundreds of fish that the state and the Lynn club stocked in the pond during the last few weeks. For most, the key to success was being on the water for first light because that’s when most of the fish were caught.uRichard Pucillo took first by successfully netting his opening day rainbow trout that tipped the scales at two pounds, eight ounces. In the Women’s Division, Rita Murphy’s 11-2 brown trout was enough to win her a trophy.Krystal Dumont caught a rainbow trout that weighed 1-1, for the junior division girl’s category trophy and Michael Lander’s 12.8-ounce rainbow scored the junior boy’s trophy.Emma Mooradian’s 14.2-ounce rainbow won the pee wee girls, and Jeremy Kerrin’s 1 lb 2 oz rainbow fetched a trophy for him.Brianna Senelal also received a $20 gift certificate to Ippi’s from a raffle. This gift certificate was donated by Fred Verell, who has been a member of Lynn Fish & Game for over 50 years.A beautiful salmon was also netted by Don Woodward. Don’s salmon weighed in at 5 lb 11.6 oz, 27 inches long with a 12-inch girth. What a trophy! No tagged fish were caught.uWith more than $65,000 worth of prizes at stake, you may want to participate in the 27th annual Winni Derby held May 16-18, on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee. It is certainly one of the best spring salmon fishing lakes in New England. MassWildlife has a few last minute reminders for turkey hunters. Hunters are reminded that a safety sticker must be adhered to firearms in such a manner as to be visible when the hunter is sighting down the barrel. Please keep in mind some basic turkey hunting safety rules. Never stalk a turkey – rather than stalking, scout out a good spot, call and wait for the turkeys to come to you. Be seen! Turkey hunters should always wear a blaze orange hat or vest as they enter and leave the area they are hunting. Tying blaze-orange survey tape around a decoy/calling location can alert other hunters to your presence and won’t scare the birds. Avoid clothes with the colors red,
