SAUGUS – Last Friday, after an ugly loss to Winthrop, the Saugus softball team decided to backtrack and start over. Not literally, of course, but figuratively.”We were in a down cycle,” said first-year coach Bobbie Finocchio, “and the kids were really down after having lost three in a row. So we decided we were going to start the season over.”Well, the Sachems are 3-0 in the new season (7-3 overall), having swept East Boston in a doubleheader Saturday and defeated English, 12-3, Wednesday. As for the Bulldogs, they’re struggling.”We’re young,” said coach Alisa Fila, “we have only two seniors, and even the juniors we have starting are young when it comes to varsity experience.”The Bulldogs are especially green on the mound, with two freshmen and a sophomore patrolling the hill in an attempt to fill the void left by the graduation of Debbie Santos.Wednesday, it was Amanda Witunsky’s turn, and she fell victim to the rejuvenated Sachems, who bashed the ball all over the place. The Bulldogs used all three of their pitchers, with Stephanie Scherrer having the most success, having retired the Sachems in order in the bottom of the sixth.Just about everyone in the Saugus lineup hit, but the biggest gun was second baseman Elizabeth Shaw, who had two hits, three runs batted in, and two runs scored. Pitcher Ashlee Patterson, who went the distance and had only one bad inning (the fifth, when she gave up all the runs), had a big day with the aluminum stick as well, knocking in three runs.Saugus scored three runs in the second inning, and that would be all it would need. With one out (and that was a rope by Shaw right to right fielder Aleasha Despres), Patterson reached when the left fielder couldn’t handle her line drive. Her courtesy runner then stole second and stayed there while Kelly Garrity walked. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Kelsey Sturgis’ single (Garrity came home on an error).Cassie Labella scored the third run with a base hit, knocking home Sturgis.Saugus came back with three more in the third. Haley Erickson led off with a single and stole second, and Shaw doubled her home. Patterson followed with another double to make it 5-0, and her courtesy runner (Jackie DeChiara) scored on Garrity’s base hit.The Sachems scored their final four runs an inning later, with Shaw blasting a triple, good for two runs, and Patterson knocking one home on an infield grounder.English finally got on the board in the top of the fifth when Jen Mageary walked, Despres doubled her to third, and Cara Crowley brought everyone home with a three-run homer to left.
