REVERE – A homeless father was arrested on shocking charges Monday after he allegedly burst into his estranged family’s Winthrop Avenue home and beat his young children and their mother before she stabbed him, police said.Jose L. Pineiro, 33, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and battery on a child under 14, breaking and entering at night to commit a felony, violating a restraining order and other assault charges.Police say Pineiro burst into 172 Winthrop Ave. around 11:15 p.m. and began assaulting his two young sons, ages 13 and 7, kicking one of them in the testicles while strangling him.He allegedly punched his 7-year-old in the head and continued to smack him when the victims’ 15-year-old sister intervened. The girl took the brothers into a bedroom and shut the door in an attempt to shield them from further harm, police said. The children’s mother was not home because she went out to pick up a pizza, according to police. While the kids were still in the bedroom, the girl managed to call her mother on a cell phone to tell her what was happening. Before the 32-year-old mother returned, Pineiro managed to make contact with the children and began punching and choking them again, according to police. When the mother arrived home, Pineiro allegedly assaulted her in a similar manner and said, “I won’t be in jail for long.”At this point, Pineiro allegedly encroached on the mother in the kitchen. She picked up a knife from the counter and stabbed him once in the shoulder, police said.Squirming away in pain, Pineiro began smashing items in a rage, according to police. When officers arrived moments later, they found potted plants, chairs and television sets thrown around the home, police said.Pineiro eventually ran away from the home, but was found minutes later at the corner of Harris and Beach streets where medical personnel treated him.Police have charged the mother, Nora I. Guzman, with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon despite the fact that she appeared to be defending herself.”There very well may have been justification for her to assault him,” Police Capt. Michael Murphy said. “That’s not for the police to decide? It’s for the courts to decide.”Guzman was not arrested but will be summonsed to court, Murphy said.
