LYNN – The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) will begin a water pipeline replacement project on May 5 and is expected to take between five and seven weeks to complete. The work will involve removing and replacing a 16-inch water line in the traffic lane along the odd numbered side of Washington Street from Broad Street to the Lynnway.Crews will begin at the intersection of Washington Street and the Lynnway, and progress toward Broad Street daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.The existing asphalt will be cut and excavated, along with the removal of the existing MWRA water main to install the new water main.According to Sasaki Associates, the Washington Street Gateway area is set for a revitalization to complement the recently approved waterfront master plan, which will include fresh landscaping, new buildings and retail space.Public Works Commissioner Jay J. Fink said with the pending transformation of the neighborhood, the replacement of the pipeline is a step in the right direction.”Better it be installed now and address any problems, then have the problems surface in the middle of major reconstruction,” he said.Access to driveways and walkways will be affected during the day, but will be accessible by the end of each workday.Parking on the odd side of the street will be restricted during work hours within designated work zones.Fink said notices would be posted to allow for alternative parking.Street sweeping will occur weekly, and restoration and permanent paving will be done at the completion of the pipeline replacement work. While existing water, sewer, and gas services from some buildings may be affected by the work, Fink said notification would be given to each household before any service is disrupted.Water, sewer and gas services will be exposed during the work and will be inspected by the LWSC and Keyspan Gas Company.Fink said work would not occur in front of each building for the entire time, but instead most likely take place for a week or so in each 50 to 75 feet of pipeline installation. The MWRA will be working closely with the Lynn Police Department and police details will be present during construction hours.Anyone with questions or concerns can contact Jeffrey McLaughlin, MWRA Community Coordinator, at 617-660-7976.For issues during non-working hours, contact the MWRA Operations Control Center at 617-305-5950.
