LYNN – Lynn songbird Kelly Riley has been nationally recognized for writing a song that nearly every woman in the country can identify with – being single.Riley recently received an honors award in the country category of the national Great American Song contest for her tune, “Please Mama, Please.”Loosely based upon a mother’s plea for her daughter to get married, Riley said the award-winning country song paints a tongue in cheek picture of a conversation with her own mother.”It’s somewhat autobiographical with a comical twist,” she quipped. “My mom is always asking me about marriage, so the song is about a woman that’s single and OK with it.”Riley said she decided to enter the song in the contest on a whim and was surprised when she learned she had won the top prize.”I was just inspired by my mother telling me that I was just too picky (with dating); it was a songwriters muse,” she said.A native of Old Saybrook, Conn., Riley attended Berklee College of Music in Boston before she settled in Lynn, where she writes music and teaches voice, guitar and piano from her home studio. After attending Berklee, Riley went on to pursue a career in music and has been the opening performer for Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett.Several of Riley’s songs from her debut CD “Live and You Learn” have played on daytime soap operas, “The Young and the Restless” and “One Life to Live.”Riley previously won top prize in the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International competition in 2001 for her song, “Love Bug” from “Live and You Learn.”Aside from playing gigs with the “Kelly Riley Band,” Riley also performs with the country/blues/roots band “Porch Party Mama’s.”For more information on Riley, visit www.kellyriley.net or www.greatamericansong.com
