SAUGUS – After starting the season 4-0, the Saugus softball squad entered Saturday’s twinbill with East Boston on a three-game skid. Needing a spark, the Sachems took advantage of several Jet miscues in the third inning, plating ten runners of the opener for a 13-1 victory at Saugus High School.Saugus overcame an early deficit to offset Eastie in the second game, 10-5. The Sachems improve to 6-3, while the Jets drop to 3-6.”We needed a sweep, as the girls were feeling down, and our morale was down a bit,” said Sachems coach Bobbie Finocchio. “This was very crucial for us.”The Sachems got things started in the top of the first of game 1. Centerfielder Cassie LeBella singled, moved to second on an infield out, then crossed the plate when Jets first baseman Brittany Davella dropped the throw from third baseman Stephanie Scarpa. The ball bounded away, and LaBella gave Saugus a 1-0 edge. Third baseman Haley Erickson, who had reached on Davella’s miscue, scored on another Eastie error, and Saugus had a 2-0 lead. The score remained 2-0 until the third, when the Sachems put forth aggressive baserunning for a 10-run burst. Designated hitter Sam Russo laced a one-out single, then went to second on an infield error. Another error loaded the bases, and catcher Kristen Garrity knocked in Russo and Erickson with a single, doubling the margin to 4-0. After a strikeout, right fielder Kelly Garrity singled off starter Lauren McCarthy, bringing home Garchinsky with the fifth Saugus score. Pitcher Ashlee Patterson would then double to plate the Garrity sisters, and teammate Elizabeth Shaw connected on a McCarthy offering for a two-run blast for a 9-0 edge. LaBella crossed the plate later in the frame on another error, while Garchinsky contributed a two-run double to complete the 10-run outburst.”You can’t give a team like Saugus chances like that with errors,” Eastie coach Tom Elliott said. “They’re a very talented team, and they played well.”Patterson kept the Jets grounded, stifling their offense, and not allowing many baserunners (she walked two while giving up five hits). The Jets did break the shutout on a solo homer by second baseman Stephanie Femina in the sixth, but Saugus got that run back in the top of the seventh when Russo singled in Shaw.East Boston took a 3-0 lead in the nightcap, when shortstop Brianna Bertocini came in on a single, and teammate Karissa Leone followed with a two-run single. Yet the Sachems didn’t waste any time tying the game. LaBella beat out a bunt, and Russo singled. One out later, Garchinsky drilled a pitch to deep center.”I never feel nervous when she’s at the plate,” said Finocchio of Garchinsky. “We were sloppy (in the top of) the first, and Lauren made something happen.”Saugus scored twice in the second, then put the game out of reach in the third. First baseman Kelsey Sturgis tripled to score catcher Ashlee DiChiara. Pinch-runner Kristen Garrity soon crossed the plate on a wild pitch, while Russo and Erickson added run-scoring singles for a 9-3 edge.Sturgis ended the Sachems’ scoring in the fourth, when Patterson blooped a single.Patterson continued to hold the Jets at bay, not allowing them to get any closer until the fifth, when Femina reached on a one-out double. She moved to third on a wild pitch, then brought Eastie within 10-4 on a groundout. The Jets added a run in the top of the seventh for the 10-5 finale. Patterson fanned nine in the second game.”She was like a machine out there,” Finocchio said. “Her endurance is unbelievable, and she seems to rev herself up even more.”
