SAUGUS – A memo from Town Counsel John Vasapolli has been circulating through town departments adding more fodder for stories swirling around the FBI investigation.Last month, Town Manager Andrew Bisignani acknowledged the Federal Bureau of Investigation was conducting an investigation into aspects of the town.Friday, Vasapolli confirmed he has been asked to produce copies of documents in pursuant to an official investigation, but he declined to confirm it was an FBI investigation. Instead, he phrased it as “cooperating with law enforcement agencies.”In his memo dated April 10, Vasapolli asked 18 departments, including the town manager’s office, to provide any and all documents relating to three specific properties and six individuals. Most notably listed among the individuals is Building Inspector Frederick Varone. In the “Document Subpoena” attached to Vasapolli’s memo, any and all documents for the period extending from Jan. 1, 1997 to the present is requested in regards to 16 Prospect Ave., 18 Prospect Ave., 2 Beach View St., Francis Ciampa Jr., Varone, Frank Giardullo, Karen Giardullo, Peter Varone and David Pretti.Vasapolli said he is not reviewing the documents collected, but he is merely a conduit collecting the information for investigators.”I haven’t reviewed the documents or made a finding because I don’t know what angle they are looking for,” he said. “I don’t know what they are investigating.””The sad part is if nothing comes of this (investigation) it still hangs a cloud over the (people’s) head,” he added.Vasapolli said he has seen it happen before when years ago another Building Inspector for the town became the subject of an investigation. Nothing ever came of the investigation, he said, but in a sense, the damage had been done.”It’s sad that we may never know,” Vasapolli said, adding that if a criminal act or wrongdoing is or was purported it should be dealt with.”I am responding to an investigation and I will continue to do so but hopefully nothing will come of it,” he said.FBI spokesman Gail Marcinkiewicz said she could not comment Friday.
