The St. Mary’s softball team broke open a tie game with two runs in the fifth inning and then held off a rally in the seventh to defeat Austin Prep, 4-2, Friday afternoon, at Breed Field.With the score 1-1, Katelynn Fanning and Maria Nazzaro led off the fifth with singles and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Burri. Erin McAndrews then came up with a big hit to drive in Fanning, and Nazzaro scored when the throw from the outfield was cut off and relayed to second base.Fanning went the route on the mound for the Spartans (4-1), allowing one earned run on three hits and four walks while striking out five. She also had two hits at the plate.St. Mary’s added another run in the sixth before the Cougars made things interesting. Austin Prep pushed across a run and then had runners on first and second with no one out before Fanning retired the next three batters on popouts.The Spartans travel to play Cardinal Spellman on Monday.Swampscott 10, Saugus 4At Saugus, Sam Perry went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI to help the Big Blue toppled undefeated Saugus. Swampscott led 7-0 before Saugus found its way on the board with four runs in the sixth inning.Carissa Roche held the Sachems hitless until the sixth and ended up with a four-hitter while striking out seven and walking two. Swampscott also had help at the plate form Marissa Gambale (2-for-3, 1 run); Mallorie McGrath (2-for-4, 2 runs); Kirstin Vinal (hit, 2 RBI) and Courtney Fletcher (hit, 2 RBI). The Big Blue scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, four in the third and three in the seventh inning.Tech 7, Chelsea 0At Tech, Yanitza Thomas struck out five for the Tech (2-3) win. She also played well defensively, as did first baseman Erika Tavarez and shortstop Noelia Matea.Kristina Hynes went 2-for-4 with a home run and Courtney Walters went 2-for-4 with a double and triple.Marblehead 8, Gloucester 6At Gloucester, the Magicians rallied from a 5-0 deficit with six runs in the fifth inning.Ashley White had three hits with three RBI and played great defense at third base to lead the Magicians (2-2).Sam Norman went 2-for-4 including a triple with two RBI and Silvie Cohen added a pair of hits.Beverly 5, Revere 3At Revere, the Patriots led 3-0 after three innings, but Beverly woke up with a home run to lead off the fifth inning. A couple of errors by Revere opened the door for two more Beverly runs that inning. The Panthers put the game away when they scored two unearned runs in the seventh.Lisa Polsonetti went 3-for-4 for Revere. Jessica Simpson and Ashley DeFrais also contributed with the bat. Nicole Perullo took the loss.Danvers 5, Winthrop 1At Danvers, the Falcons’ Ashley Burnham continues to be the opposing pitcher’s worst nightmare.The senior shortstop had a pair of doubles and scored a run before the Vikings decided to intentionally walk her the next time up. Danvers (3-1, 3-0 NEC) scored a run in the second inning and four in the third. Diana Bean (7 IP, 3 hits, no walks, 1 strikeout, 1 earned run) helped herself out by going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Winthrop scored its run in the first inning on a Courtney Finn single.
