When St. Mary’s and Bishop Fenwick lock horns, fans are usually in for a good game, and that was the case in boys lacrosse Wednesday.The Crusaders (4-4) won, 6-4, at Peabody, but the Spartans didn’t make it easy. After getting off to a slow start, St. Mary’s battled back from a 5-1 halftime deficit with three fourth-quarter goals.”St. Mary’s fought hard. They kept coming at us,” Fenwick coach Jay Richards said. “They’re a much improved club.”Sophomore Joe Flaherty got his first start up front and made it count with a hat trick (his first three goals of the season). Don Hesse had 14 saves over three quarters with Matt Rogers taking over in the fourth.Blue Hills 7, Tech 3At Canton, Jordan Rucker had two goals and Damon Whyte added one, but the Tigers, who only trailed 3-1 at the half, still came up short. Jeff Valley chipped in with two assists, Chris Beaton with one and Richard Contreras (22 saves) had a nice game in net.BOYS TRACKG’ster 69, S’scott 67At Swampscott, the Big Blue (1-1) nearly knocked off the Fishermen in a meet that featured several state qualifying times. Spencer Shonio won the 100 (11.0) and the 400 (51.2) and qualified in both; Matt Gate won the 300 low hurdles (44.1) to qualify and Sam Rakoc won the 2-mile (10:10.1) with another state qualifying time. John Michael Mason won the 200 (22.5) and Kimson Jean took second (22.7). Both qualified for the states with personal bests. Amil Divadkur won the high hurdles (17.9) and David Wilson, the javelin (122-0). Both were personal bests. Jordan Kelley qualified for the states in the discus (122-0), but had to settle for second.Coach Dom Finelli said this was the closest his team had come to beating Gloucester in his six years as head of the program.
