The plight for Saugus on Monday was pretty bad. The Sachems were down to their last out against Marblehead and were in an 8-4 hole. But with one swing of Mike Silva’s bat, things changed.Silva cranked a grand slam, his second homer in as many innings, to tie the game at 8-8 and Tyler Calla’s bloop single in the eighth was the difference in a 9-8 Saugus win at World Series Park.”I couldn’t believe it,” Saugus coach Pat Petrone said about Silva’s homer.The Sachems (2-2) got the rally started with walks from Ryan Bateman and Harry Rocheville. Dave Ferriera singled to load the bases with no outs.Calla and pinch-hitter Rich Sudanowicz then went down before Silva tattooed a bomb over the right-center fence to force extra innings.In the eighth, Saugus again worked some two-out magic. Bateman was plunked with one out and promptly stole second. Rocheville singled to put runners on the corners. Then, with two out, Calla dumped a base hit into short left to give Saugus the win.Marblehead (0-3) got a 2-run homer from Mike Sahagian and a leadoff homer from Brandon Lee to start the game. Nick Haller also drove home two runs.St. Mary’s 8, Williams 3At Braintree, Nick Conti got the complete-game win, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts in the Spartans’ (2-1, 1-0 Catholic Central League) conference opener.St. Mary’s used a five-run fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and take control.John McDonald was the offensive star for St. Mary’s, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Yano Petruzzelli was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Anthony Struppa was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Tade Ogunbona also drove home a run.English 5, Salem 2At Palmer Cove in Salem, the Bulldogs (2-1) scored four times in the third inning to take a lead they never relinquished.Jonathan Surrette got the win on the bump for English, holding Salem to two earned runs, five hits and four strikeouts in the complete game. He also had a 2-run double in the fourth. Catcher Roberto Reyes completed the inning with a 2-run homer.Alex Fiste drove in English’s final run with an RBI single in the fifth.Danvers 9, S’scott 6At Swampscott, the Falcons (2-0) had a 9-2 lead entering the bottom of the seventh and then had to hang on as Swampscott got four runs off reliever Jeff Eldridge.Bobby Dean was spectacular for Danvers on the mound, holding Swampscott to one hit over six innings with 12 strikeouts and two walks.Eldridge drove home two runs while Chris Perry, Troy Thibodeau and Tom Marini each had one RBI. Swampscott’s (1-1) Steve Moran was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI.Peabody 7, Beverly 6At Bezemes Field in Peabody, the Tanners (3-1, 1-0 NEC) beat one of the top pitchers in the conference in Beverly’s Jack Leathersich. Kevin Skop got the win and Pat Dumas recorded a two-inning save, retiring all six batters he faced.The Tanners scored twice in the first, second and fourth innings and added a single run in the fifth. Josh Band drove home two for Peabody while Pat Yeo was 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI in the fifth. Danny Mello and Tom Ciulla each scored twice.W’ster Nth. 3, Fenwick 1At Peabody, the Crusaders’ (1-4) offensive woes continued as starting pitcher Andrew Guido carried a no-hitter into the fifth before surrendering a 1-0 lead.Fenwick’s run came in the third when Dave Ruggiero doubled and scored on Dale Crispin’s sacrifice fly.
