For the third straight game, the Lynnfield baseball team was in a dogfight. Having already won one game this season by coming from behind, the Pioneers did it again on Saturday at Ipswich.Lynnfield trailed 4-1 entering the top of the fifth inning but exploded for four runs to take the lead and then staved off a late Tigers rally to take a 5-4 victory and improve to 3-0.”It was a nice comeback win for us,” Lynnfield coach John O’Brien said. “Gardy (O’Flynn) has a good team up there and we spotted them some runs.”The comeback began with a Matt Connolly double. Nick Roberts cut the lead to 4-2 with a double of his own that scored Connolly. Vinny DiCesare (3-for-4) kept the momentum going with Lynnfield’s third straight double that plated Roberts to make it 4-3.A walk to John Caruso set the stage for Brian Corcoran, who delivered a 2-run single to give the Pioneers the lead.Mario Padovani then made that lead stand up as he got he complete-game win, striking out four and allowing one earned run in seven innings. The Tigers had the tying and winning runs in scoring position in the seventh, but Padovani got a fly ball to right to end the game.Danvers 13, Melrose 1At Danvers, Jeff Eldridge pitched four innings of one-hit ball to pick up the win for the Falcons (1-0) in their first game of the season. Eldridge had four strikeouts and walked none.Bob Dean led the way offensively for Danvers, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Jake Korthas chipped in with two hits and two RBI.The Falcons jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three runs in each of the first three innings. After a four-run fourth, coach Roger Day pulled his starters and let his bench finish the game.Masco 10, Fenwick 0At Topsfield, Bishop Fenwick (1-3) ran out of gas after a week during which it played four games.”Our pitching wasn’t there and we didn’t get hits,” Fenwick coach Russ Steeves said. “They put up 10 runs, and we didn’t.”Masco jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the first inning and never looked back.Tom Moules took the loss on the mound for the Crusaders.BOYS LACROSSESt. Mary’s 5, Matignon 4At Lynn, Joe Twomey scored the game-winning goal in the fourth overtime to propel the Spartans (1-1) to their first victory of the season.”It was a sloppy game and we hade some opportunities we couldn’t take advantage of,” Spartans coach Jeff Smith said. “But Joe made a big shot.”Dan Hesse came off the bench in goal for the Spartans with his team trailing 3-2 and made 14 saves over the remainder of the contest.MC 14, Peabody 9At Malden, Derek West had four goals and two assists for the Tanners (2-2), but it wasn’t enough against one of the top lacrosse programs in Massachusetts.Mike Pennachio added a hat trick and an assist for Peabody, which also got goals from Greg Schider and Nick Hiou. Luke Moran and Rich Grillo each dished out two assists.Ham-Wen 9, M’head 5At Hamilton-Wenham, the Magicians (1-2) trailed 4-3 early in the first half. Eventually, Hamilton-Wenham proved too strong for the Magicians, overpowering them in the second half. Mike Cohn led Marblehead with two goals, while Tucker Cohen added a goal and an assist.Matt O’Neil made 12 saves for the Magicians.Danvers 11, Fenwick 1At Peabody, the Falcons came out strong against the Crusaders (3-4), taking a 3-1 lead after the first period. The Falcons subsequently scored eight straight goals.Brandon Ballard was the lone goal-scorer for Fenwick.In other action, the boys tennis match between English and St. Mary’s on Saturday was postponed due to rain. No makeup date has been announced.
