The Salem State College baseball team swept a doubleheader at Fitchburg State, 14-12 and 7-4, on Sunday to improve to 19-8 (5-1 in the MASCAC).The first game was a slugfest as the teams combined for 26 runs on 23 hits. The Vikings trailed 11-10 entering the sixth inning before a grand slam by Ben Garlington propelled Salem State to the victory.In the latter contest, Salem State pitcher Ken Luongo pitched 6.1 solid innings to earn the victory. Luongo allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits, along with five strikeouts.Shortstop Ryan Kane of Nahant led the offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.SOFTBALLSalem State split two games with Fitchburg State, winning 11-2 in the opener before suffering an 8-7 loss in the second game. The Vikings’ record stands at 13-15 (2-4 in the MASCAC).Sarah Funk paced the Vikings in the first game, going 4-for-4 with an RBI in the leadoff spot. Jess Baird was 3-for-4 with four RBI for Salem State.Vikings pitcher Katelyn Doherty of Lynnfield earned the victory, allowing only two hits in a complete-game effort.In game two, Salem State was unable to hold a 6-2 lead and trailed 7-6 heading into the final inning. Although the Vikings were able to tie the game on a fielding error by Fitchburg State, Leigh Trzcinski scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning.Baird was the top performer offensively during the game for the Vikings, going 4-for-4 with an RBI.TENNISThe Vikings swept the doubles matches and lost just one singles match en route to an 8-1 victory over the Bears of Bridgewater State College in Little East Conference (LEC) action Sunday afternoon at SSC’s New Central Campus Tennis Courts.SSC (7-4 overall, 4-0 LEC) has won six of its last seven matches after beginning the season 1-3. The Vikings have yet to lose an LEC match this spring. The Bears are now 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the LEC.MEN’S LACROSSEThe Vikings jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the half en route to a 12-9 victory over the Colonels of Curry College in a match played Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.SSC (6-3) received four goals from sophomore attackman Justin Jones (Danvers), three goals from freshman attackman Jonathan Falls and single scoring strikes from senior attackman Ross Arnold (Salem), junior middie Alex Verity, sophomore middie Luke Metraw, junior middie Tim Bartlett (Danvers) and sophomore middie Robert Mulroy (Swampscott). Falls and Arnold set up three scores each while Jones, Verity, Metraw, and senior middie Scott Aronian picked up single assists.SSC junior goaltender Keith Hardy recorded the win between the pipes, making 19 stops.
