The English High baseball team needed a ladder to climb out of the hole it dug in its season opener against Marblehead Wednesday at Seaside Park.The Bulldogs escaped with a 7-6 win after finding themselves down 6-0 at the end of the third. The comeback began when English scored three runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth and ended with three runs in the top of the seventh.”The kids battled,” English coach Joe Caponigro said. “They never gave in, which was good to see.”Caponigro said his team didn’t hit the ball all that well, but it did come up with a couple of timely pokes to go with a solid defensive effort.”It was a good way to start, but it’s a long season,” Caponigro said.Jonathan Surette started on the mound for English, but he struggled, only lasting 2 2/3 innings. He allowed six runs, five of them earned. Pat Cullen (1 hit, 5 strikeouts, 6 walks, 1 hit batter) went 3 2/3 innings in relief.Although Cullen picked up the win, Kyle Moore provided the seventh-inning heroics when he came on in relief with one out and the bases loaded. He got the first batter he faced to strike out and the next one to ground out to end the game. He got the save.Marblehead centerfielder Brandon Lee went 2-for-4, scored two runs, drove in a run and stole two bases, and Connor Carey had a hit and two RBI. Evan Comeau went the first five innings, striking out nine and allowing three runs. Shawn Likins went the final two innings, allowing one earned run while striking out three.In the Bulldogs’ three-run fourth, two runs came in on an error on a ball hit by Eric Bransfield and Cullen singled in the third. Roberto Reyes had walked and Jonathan Santelises reached on a double to set the stage.Surette led off the fifth inning with a double and scored on a Reyes double to cut the lead to 6-4. The Bulldogs (1-0) made it 6-5 in the seventh when pinch-hitter Angelo Codispoti walked with the bases loaded, Dan Vincente singled in the tying run and Cullen ended up scoring the winning run on a wild pitch.Malden Catholic 3, Peabody 1At Peabody, errors doomed the Tanners, as all three runs scored by the Lancers were unearned. In the second inning, two errors allowed for two of the runs and for Malden Catholic to take the lead. Marc Linehan started for Peabody (1-1), allowing three hits in four innings while striking out two and walking two. Jared Shields came in relief and pitched a perfect three innings.Peabody scored in the fourth inning when James Noftle knocked in Josh Band from second base with a single.Salem 4, Saugus 0At Saugus, Harry Noone pitched six innings of two-hit ball to lead the Witches (1-0) to victory. Noone sat down four batters via the K and only walked two.Four different Salem hitters recorded two hits, with Noone, Dan Reddy, Ben Henderson, and Colby Bouley providing the offense. Reddy also scored three runs and stole two bases.Prep 14, Methuen 3At Methuen, the Prep erupted for eight runs in the top of the seventh to seal what was up to that point a close game. Coming out of the first inning, St. John’s led 4-3 and then scratched another run across in the sixth inning for a 5-3 lead.Leading the offense for the Eagles (3-1) were Trevor Manzi (4-4, 2 RBI, 3 runs), Mike Yastrzemski (3-3, RBI), and John Vigliotti (3-4, 3 RBI).Getting the win in relief was Matt Warden. Warden pitched the final five innings, not giving up a hit, striking out eight and walking one. The lone free pass was the only baserunner allowed by Warden.Spellman 5, Fenwick 2At Peabody, the Crusaders dropped their second game of the season in a tough nine-inning loss. For Fenwick, Andrew Guido pitched seven innings, only giving up one run. Anthony Pisani and Dale Crispin both recorded a triple for Fenwick (0-2) while T.J. Fossa had an RBI single.
