Salem State College track star Eddie Bynum III of Lynn won the men’s 100-meter dash at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Track & Field Invitational at Fitchburg State College on Sunday.Bynum won in 10.91. He also placed second in the men’s 200-meter dash (21.87). The Vikings totaled 40 points and placed ninth of 17 teams in the 21-event invitational. Bates College won the invitational with 124.50 points.BASEBALLThe Vikings, ranked No. 8 in New England, scored four runs in the second inning and never looked back en route to an 11-1 victory over the Owls of the University of Maine-Presque Isle in a makeup game at the new Salem State College baseball field.SSC (14-6), which has won five of its last six and 10 of its last 12, received solid performances from five different pitchers against the Owls (2-6). Starter Josh Jennings was credited with the victory after allowing four hits over five innings. Jennings held UMPI scoreless, struck out three and walked one.SSC relievers Greg Richards (Saugus), Tim Cooper, Chad Wallace and Bobby Fournier, who each logged one inning, combined to allow one hit and one run. Offensively, the Vikings received a two-run home run from Ryan Kane (Nahant); a pair of doubles from Anthony Palmieri (Peabody); two singles, an RBI and two runs scored from Mike Addesa (Revere); a two-run single from Mike Dedo; a two-run single from Bobby Celentano (Peabody) and RBI singles from Matt Mello (Peabody) and Steve Mucci. Aaron Blades singled and scored two runs for SSC, which used 23 players in the game.On Sunday, the Vikings split a doubleheader at Bridgewater State. The hosts rolled to a 7-0 win in Game One before SSC rebounded with a 7-5 win in the nightcap. Rob Coppola of Revere scored a run for Salem in Game Two, and Addesa hit an RBI double in that game.SOFTBALLIn softball, the Vikings dropped a pair in Bridgewater, losing 6-5 and 11-3. Sophomore shortstop Katie Oram of Lynn hit an RBI double for SSC in the top of the fourth in Game One, pulling her team within 3-2 before a three-run Bears fourth. Freshman Taylor Orlando added a two-run single in the top of the seventh and advanced to third, but SSC could not score the tying run.In Game Two, SSC pitcher Katelyn Doherty of Lynnfield took the loss, allowing nine runs (only 6 of them earned) in three innings.
