BOSTON – Lynn native Gary Zerola, 36, a former prosecutor for Essex and Suffolk counties, was acquitted Tuesday of charges related to sexual assault. It was his second acquittal on similar charges this yearA Boston attorney who once made People magazine’s list of America’s “Most Eligible Bachelors” had been accused of raping a 19-year-old woman in 2006 after two hours of deliberations by a Suffolk Superior Court jury.In January, the 36-year-old former prosecutor was acquitted by a different Suffolk jury of attempted rape and other charges involving allegations by another 19-year-old woman in 2006.Zerola still faces a charge in Florida, where he is accused of raping an 18-year-old woman at a Miami Beach hotel in October. He has pleaded not guilty.Zerola mouthed the words “thank you” to the jurors as they filed past him on Wednesday.”I have faith in God and I have faith in our system of justice,” he was quoted as saying in a published report. “Today is a victory for all those people who are falsely accused.”Meanwhile, the woman who brought the charges against him and her family cried upon hearing the verdict and left court without comment.Zerola’s lawyer, Janice Bassil, claimed in court that the woman who brought the charges was a liar and a party girl, according to the report. She used a similar defense in the prior case. Bassil did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press. The case was prosecuted by the Middlesex district attorney’s office because Zerola worked briefly in the Suffolk district attorney’s office.Zerola was named one of the “Most Eligible Bachelors” in 2001 because of his good looks and good deeds working with foster children.
