SALEM – A Peabody man police say they caught driving drunk for his fifth time last month was deemed a danger to the community and denied bail in Superior Court Thursday.Robert W. Crean, 45, of 17 Rockway Road, petitioned for a bail review in Superior Court after being deemed a danger earlier in Peabody District Court, but Judge Howard J. Whitehead agreed with the lower judge and ordered that Crean remain held without bail, saying there are “no conditions of release” to ensure the safety of the community.Assistant District Attorney A.J. Camelio told Whitehead that Crean got arrested Feb. 18 in Peabody. It was about 5:30 p.m., when Peabody Police Lt. Dennis Bonaiuto was on routine patrol and saw a man driving a Subaru through Peabody Square at a high rate of speed and pulled the vehicle over as it went onto nearby Foster Street.Bonaiuto observed that Crean’s speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and he was unsteady on his feet and an odor of alcohol was on his breath.A further investigation revealed that Crean was operating the vehicle on a suspended license.Crean told the officer he had just gotten out of work and that he worked as a bartender at a club.Camelio said that Crean also refused to take a blood test and breathalyzer test as he asked Whitehead to continue to hold Crean as a danger to society.Defense lawyer John Appruzzese tried to persuade Whitehead to let his client go free and be on house arrest after setting bail.He said Crean is the father of three daughters, works at the Kernwood Country Club and has a heart condition.Whitehead pointed out that Crean was arrested for possession of cocaine in September, noting “I wouldn’t think taking cocaine is the best thing for his heart,” as he remarked about his criminal record going back to 1980 involving narcotics and drug convictions.Crean is due back in Peabody District Court on March 13.
