NORTH ANDOVER – The Bishop Fenwick boys basketball team came into its Division 3 North semifinal on Tuesday against top-seeded Wilmington knowing that beating the Wildcats would be a tall task. But for nearly four quarters inside the Crozier Gym, it looked like the Crusaders were going to make the trip to Lowell on Saturday for the North final. Wilmington, however, will be the one heading to Tsongas Arena to play Watertown. The Wildcats forced overtime on Matt Bibeau’s tip-in with 10 seconds left in regulation and then officially overcame a nearly superhuman effort from Fenwick’s Mike Clifford, who finished with 33 points and 19 rebounds, when Chris Melillo hit a three with 10 seconds left in overtime for a 68-66 win.”(Fenwick) plays in a great league and we battled and battled with them,” Wilmington coach Jim McCune said. “But there’s no one else I’d rather have shooting that three than Chris. He’s been living for that moment for a long time.”For the Crusaders, it was a heartbreaking end to an outstanding effort in front of a packed house. Fenwick had an 11-point lead late in the third quarter and a six-point lead with 2:45 left in regulation, but was unable to make a stand when it needed one.”We started well in the third quarter and then in the fourth we didn’t get the stops or come up with the offensive rebounds when we needed them,” Fenwick coach Sean Connolly said. “(Wilmington) came up with the big stops and we had a couple of unforced turnovers down the stretch.”Fenwick had a comfortable lead of nine when Nolan DiPanfilo (21 points) scored on the first possession of the fourth quarter. But the Wildcats turned to a half-court trapping defense to try to slow down Fenwick.”We changed to the half-court trap to try and take them out of rhythm a bit,” McCune said. The change seemed to work as the Wildcats quickly cut the lead back to 48-44 before Trevor Grace canned a three from the right corner to give Fenwick back a seven-point lead.Enter Melillo. The off-guard, who spent the first half on the bench with two fouls, hit a three to get Wilmington back in the game. But Clifford asserted himself again, scoring on a putback and two free throws to make it 55-49 with 2:45 left.”We thought that we had a height advantage down low and we tried to get the ball to Mike there,” Connolly said. But Melillo hit another three to cut the lead to three before Bibeau tipped home a miss to make it 55-54 with 80 seconds left in regulation.Following a Clifford free throw, Bibeau finally got the Wildcats even with a layup in the paint with 55 seconds left.Clifford got the ball at the other end of the floor and was fouled with 32.3 seconds remaining. The junior made both shots, giving Fenwick back the lead. But Wilmington had one more chance and took full advantage when Bibeau put back a Zach Fahey miss to send the game to overtime.”We might not be much to look at, but we are tough,” McCune said. “And we’ll keep coming at you and will never quit.”In overtime, the teams continued to trade the lead at will, with Fenwick holding a 65-62 margin after a Clifford layup at the 1:35 mark.Melillo closed the gap to 66-65 with 1:05 left on a jumper from the foul line. Fenwick turned the ball over on its next possession, giving the Wildcats a chance to steal victory. And do that they did.Melillo got the ball on the right wing after a Crusader defender slipped and fell, delivering the knockout blow when he swished a three with 10 seconds left.”We kind of lucked into it, but all that matters is we got the win,” McCune said. The Wildcats had a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter before Fenwick stormed back on the back of Clifford, who scored 14 of 17 second-quarter points to trim the Wilmington lead to 26-25 at the half.Fenwick took the lead for only the second time in the game on a DiPanfilo three to begin the half. The two teams then went back and forth over the next four minutes before the Crusaders went on an 11-0 run to open up a 46-35 lead with 1:36 left in the th
