NORTH BILLERICA – The last time that a Marblehead hockey team played for a North championship, pretty much all of the current Headers weren’t even born. The year was 1985 when Marblehead lost to St. John’s Prep in the Division 1 North finals in Boston. Well, for the first time in nearly a quarter-century, a Header team will go for a sectional title. On Monday at the Chelmsford Forum, Marblehead continued its Cinderella run through the Division 3 North tournament as Ellery Smith’s goal 54 seconds into the contest was all the Headers needed to upset No. 1 seed Trinity Catholic, 1-0.”We go by the name of the Headers, but I think that maybe we have a little bit of magic in us, too,” Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said (referring to the Marblehead football team’s nickname, the Magicians). “We watched Trinity a little bit the other night and we said that they were good. But our kids rose to the challenge.”Marblehead (13-10-0), the No. 12 seed, will now play No. 2 Concord-Carlisle on Friday (5:10) in the sectional final at the Forum. The Headers’ defense was at the heart of the win for the second time in three tournament games.Marblehead held Falcon forwards Tim and Matt Foley, who were among the top scorers in the division, off the board and generally frustrated them for most of the game. That defense also held Trinity without a shot for 9:36 in the second period and over 10:00 in the third.”We knew that they had good forwards and we really talked about playing solid defense,” Jackson said. “The goals that we gave up to Latin Academy and Swampscott were because of breakdowns in the defensive zone and we wanted to shore that up a bit. And the guys did a great job.”Jackson also was quick to mention senior forward Eric Fader, who was out because of an injured elbow suffered in a postgame celebration following a previous win over Latin Academy. But Fader got his say before the game and, according to Jackson, it worked.”An assist should go to Eric because he gave the pregame speech,” Jackson said. “He talked to the boys and it was from his heart. He really should get an assist for this game.”Evidently the Headers took Fader’s words to heart because Marblehead stormed out of the gates and took the lead on the game’s first shot.Smith picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and ripped a shot that sailed over the shoulder of Falcon goalie Seth Moccia to give Marblehead a 1-0 lead. The Headers would control the rest of the period with tight defense, which held Trinity (17-4-1) to only four shots on goal, as Marblehead carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.”Everyone has been doubting us as the No. 12 seed,” Marblehead goaltender Aaron Reny said. “But it’s all about confidence and it’s gone up with every win.”Marblehead again came out and controlled the play in the second period, but simply couldn’t get anything done offensively despite putting eight shots on goal. The problem was that the Headers were missing the net nearly half the time, helping to keep the Falcons alive.”Our goal was to get every shot on the net and I thought that we didn’t do a good job of that,” Jackson said. “But I’ll take the defensive effort we got instead.”Marblehead nearly doubled its lead late in the period when Andrew Bates intercepted a pass in front of the Trinity net. But Moccia flashed the right pad to make the stop and keep it 1-0.That save seemed to wake up the Falcons, who put on sustained pressure for the first time in the contest over the final 90 seconds of the second. But Reny was right there to make the saves and preserve the lead heading to the third. The Falcons tried to make a charge in the third and had a chance to get even when Mike Cohn was called for tripping at 9:40. But even their best chance, a Nick Bullens deflection as the man advantage ended, went harmlessly wide.Trinity would suffer an even more crippling blow when Anthony Kontos was sent off for cross-checking at 13:09, pretty much deflating any hopes the Falcons had of a last-ditch
