PEABODY-City Councilors Thursday night supported a request made by the Drug Prevention and Awareness Committee to donate $8,000 to the Peabody/Lynnfield YMCA?s “Y It Matters” program.Committee Chair Ted Bettencourt Jr. said the donation would leave the Committee with just under $4,000 in their account, but believes the after school program, created in part by Councilor Dave Gravel, would benefit from the donation. Fellow members agreed.Councilor Anne Manning was a strong advocate for the donation particularly because of the Monday through Friday, 3-6 p.m. time schedule. She said she?s steadfast to get the “vision and focus” to stay within those hours, a time when most children wander into trouble.?I don?t want to be spread too thin with our limited resources,” she said.As for replacing the $8,000, Bettencourt suggested several fundraising options, including a summer golf tournament.Y It Matters is a program organized through the efforts of Dave Gravel, the Peabody Chamber of Commerce, and the Peabody Youth Foundation, among other volunteers and sponsors. It targets underprivileged youth in grades 3-5 who need extra homework help afterschool. The program provides transportation from school directly to the Lynnfield Street YMCA, where they participate in a variety of activities pertaining to health, nutrition, fitness, and substance abuse awareness.Along similar lines, Councilor Barry Sinewitz made a motion to have the Committee to look into inviting Jeff Rustein, a former steroid addict, to speak with Peabody students about the widespread epidemic. Bettencourt agreed, but suggested having Athletic Director Phil Sheridan weigh in on the decision.
