WINTHROP ? A high school basketball game is a 32-minute marathon, not a 4-minute mile. And that’s a good thing for Winthrop. The Vikings rallied from a 16-point deficit in the first quarter and ended up with a comfortable 62-47 win over New Mission, in a Div. 4 North quarterfinal round tournament game, Friday night, at Winthrop High.Sixth-seeded Winthrop (14-8) next plays the winner of tonight’s Trinity Catholic/Lynnfield game at a date, time and site to be determined. On Friday, four players scored in double figures for the Vikings, who were led by Mark Jenkins with 16 points, while Dino Mallios added 14. Michael Visco had 12, while Jonathan Murdock – playing on one leg – came up with 11.Onkeyachi Nzerm and Ramon Mejia had 14 points apiece for the Titans, who scored 22 points in the first 5:52 of the game but came up with just 25 the rest of the way.New Mission hit six of its first eight 3-point attempts, but Winthrop switched to a man-to-man defense and held the Titans to just one 3-pointer after that.”We played them earlier this season and had some good success with our matchup zone,” Winthrop coach David Brown said. “They just came out tonight and started burying 3-pointers, but then the kids just dug in and played better D.”New Mission coach Daryl Hilliard agreed Winthrop made better adjustments as the game went along.”They just wanted it more,” Hilliard said. “I give them a lot of credit because they hung in there after our quick start, and we couldn’t match their intensity.”Charles Gunter’s second 3-pointer gave the Titans a 14-2 lead just 3:04 into the first quarter, at which point New Mission was on a pace to score 132 points in the game.Another three by Mejia and a 3-point play by Nzerm upped the lead to 22-6, before the stunned Winthrop crowd had even gotten into the game.Visco started the comeback with a 3-point play and when Jenkins hit a bomb from the right wing to make the score 25-14 at the end of the first quarter, there was suddenly some hope for the Vikings.A drive along the left baseline by Jenkins closed out a 16-3 run for Winthrop, which then found itself down by just three (25-22) with 3:55 left in the first half.Nzerm hit a couple of buckets to keep the Titans in the lead, but it eventually evaporated when Mallios canned a long 3-pointer from the right wing just before the halftime buzzer to make the score 30-29 in Winthrop’s favor.”I knew once we got the lead we were in pretty good shape,” Brown said. The teams traded the lead once early in the third period before another three by Mallios gave it back to the Vikings for good with 6:15 remaining. Nzerm again kept New Mission close, but Winthrop slowly built its lead throughout the remainder of the period. Murdock fed Mallios with a pretty pass from the high post for a running layup thast made the score 47-41 after three quarters.New Mission managed just six points for the rest of the game, while Winthrop kept pouring on the points. Another bucket by Mallios, this time after a good pass from Jenkins, gave the Vikings their first double-digit lead at 52-42 with 5:27 left in the game. Murdock, who had been limping up and down the floor on his heavily-wrapped ankle, put in the dagger with a couple of free throws to peak the lead at 15 with 1:40 remaining.”I don’t know who our leading scorer was tonight, but I know we had a lot of kids put the ball in the basket,” Brown said.
