The St. John’s Prep swim team won the Division 1 states on Sunday at Harvard.In the 200 medley relay, the Prep took second thanks to Kyle Jendrock, Joe Hines, Tyler Lareau, and Mark Scalise. In the 200 free relay, the Prep won, thanks to Scalise, Lareau, Jon Castoldo, and Jeff Fiore. Scalise won the 50 free with an All-American time (21.53). In the 200 free, Fiore was fifth. The Prep’s last relay (the 400 free) was third (Mike Cohen, Castoldo, Adam Aramo, and Fiore).Meanwhile, in its best finish in 19 years, Marblehead’s girls swimming team placed second overall in the Division 2 girls state meet.The Magicians’ best performance came in the 200 medley relay. The team of Caroline Belli, Catherine Rafferty-Millet, Catherine Foley and Caroline Caliri placed second with a time of 1:52.Belli took home a second first-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:00.3), while finishing second in the 200 IM (2:12.91).The team of Caliri, Suzane Foley, Rafferty-Millet and Belli broke the school record and placed third in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:42.33. The Magicians team of S. Foley, Merrick, Caroline Humphrey and C. Foley also took home a third-place finish in the 200 free relay (1:45.94).Marblehead had three of the top 12 in the 200 freestyle: Caliri, sixth (2:00.89); Tessa Merrick, 10th (2:03.10); and S. Foley, 12th (2:03.72).The Magicians had six other individual accomplishments: Emily Rookwood, third in 100 backstroke (1:00.75); Haley Robb, fourth in diving (303.45); S. Foley, eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.07); Rafferty-Millet, ninth in 100 breaststroke (1:12.15); and 10th in the 100 butterfly (102.58); and Merrick, 10th in the 400 freestyle (5:41.24).Classical was also well-represented in the Division 1 meet. Sophomore Katelyn Kidney placed fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:00.19) and seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:27.04). In her scholastic swan song, Tia Murkison placed 11th in the diving competition with a score of 334.7.Marblehead also did well in the boys competition, placing 13th.Ted Rafferty-Millet had a particularly strong performance for the Magicians. He placed fourth in the 200 IM (2:02.89), while placing sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.92).He was also on the medley relay team that featured Chris Argerios, Trevor Byrd and Trevor Trainor, who finished with a time of 1:47.72.Tech diver Marcos Castellano placed 18th in both state meet and sectionals.Peabody diver Steve Maruzzi placed 12th (337 points) for the Tanners, who haven’t had a boys diver place since the mid-1990s.
