It’s not just the New England Patriots who have run the regular-season table. Now, the Patriots will have to reserve some space for the St. Mary’s girls hockey team. The Spartans left no doubt that they were up for the task Thursday, shellacking Boston Latin, 8-2, at Northeastern’s Matthews Arena to finish their regular season at 21-0.Courtney Winters led the assault with three goals, and Abby Gauthier chipped in with two goals and three assists as the Spartans scored four in the first and four in the second before Latin could get a point on the board.Other goal-scorers for St. Mary’s were Mikaela Donovan (with an assist from her twin sister, Bridget), Sabrina Iannetti and Kaitlin Gottwald.”We never thought about (going undefeated),” said coach Frank Pagliuca. “But it’s a great accomplishment for the kids. It’s a tribute to them. They’ve had a great year, they’ve played excellent hockey, and the coaching staff is extremely pleased.”All the Spartans have to do now is wait. They know they’re the top seed in the upcoming Division 1 state tournament, “and it looks like we’ll probably play (next) Thursday, at home,” Pagliuca said. “We have to wait for a preliminary game to be played.”All season long, our only goal has been to focus on how we’re performing,” he said. “We’ve been trying to strive for consistency. And it’s paid off to this point.”But, he says, “the tournament is a new season, and it can be a one-game season. It’s going to be important for us to come in, stay focused, and play well. If we do the things we’ve been doing, we have a good opportunity here.”The Spartans last won the state title in 2005.BOYS HOCKEYFenwick 3, Beverly 2At McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, the Crusaders, 12-7-1, scored two third-period power-play goals to conclude their regular season on a winning note.”For us, it was a very good win,” said coach Bob Tierney. “We came from behind against a very determined Beverly team.”Beverly has had a ton of injuries, and they wanted to end their season on a positive note,” Tierney said. “They were very competitive, and you’d think it was a tourney game the way they played.”After a scoreless first period, Fenwick’s Jordan Mizioch, with an assist from Jake Bartolomeo, gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead with 2:51 gone in the second frame. But Beverly scored the next two, by Mike Boches and Connor Walsh, to go up, 2-1, going into the third period. However, Mark Sparaco evened things up at 9:24 and Dale Crispin, with assists from Pat Doliber and James Gattuso, put the Crusaders over the top at 12:50.BOYS BASKETBALLFenwick 66, Ipswich 58At Ipswich, the Crusaders finished their regular season at 11-9.
