DANVERS – In the boys championship game of the North Shore Invitational, St. John’s Prep opened the contest on a 5-0 run and for all intents and purposes, the game was over.Bishop Fenwick kept it close early, trailing only by five (16-11) after the first quarter, but a 24-4 Eagle run in the second quarter quieted any whispers of a potential upset, and the Prep captured its second consecutive Invitational title with a 69-38 win.”The Prep has a ton of talent,” said Fenwick coach Sean Connolly. “They have great players, and when they put it all together like they did tonight, they’re too tough for us. They can beat anyone in the state.”Ryan O’Connell became the first male to repeat as the Invitational’s Most Valuable Player and joined Peabody’s D’Yana Delpero (2001-02) and Masconomet’s Caroline Stewart (2007-08) as the only repeat winners of the award. The guard single-handedly outscored the Crusaders in the first half by a total of 16-15, and later finished with a team-high 21 to go along with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.Samuel Baker added 17 points and 11 boards for the Eagles, and freshman Patrick Connaughton scored nine off the bench. Ryan Dempsey scored only two points for the victors, but his presence was felt on the glass, where he ripped down 11 rebounds and battled with Fenwick’s big junior, Mike Clifford.Despite the contest being far out of reach, there was one positive moment that stood out for Fenwick. In the fourth quarter, Clifford’s successful free throw attempt earned him 1,000 points for his career.”Mike (a Danvers resident) has been with us two years. We won the league last year, and he’s been huge down the stretch with us winning four in a row to make the state tournament,” Connolly said. “I took him out towards the end, but he really wanted to get his 1,000th point in front of his family here in Danvers, so I put him back.”Clifford was the game’s high scorer with 21 and also had 15 rebounds. Nolan DiPanfilo and Nick Cotoia both finished with six points, and no other Crusader had more than two.Cotoia was the game MVP for Fenwick, while O’Connell received the honor for the Prep. The All-Tournament Team was composed of Fenwick’s Clifford and Cotoia, the Eagles’ O’Connell, Baker and Andrew Knight, and Beverly’s Mathew Tobin.Beverly defeated Danvers in the consolation game by a score of 80-67.The Panthers (12-8) had four players in double figures. Matt Tobin led the pack with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Nate Knudsen was good for 17 points, Brian Skerry had 12 points, and sophomore point guard Mike Clayton had 11 points.
