DANVERS – Beverly entered the North Shore Invitational at Danvers High riding a five-game winning streak after its first-round victory over Bishop Fenwick. With an 8-11 record entering Monday, the Panthers were no longer eligible to make the state tournament, but, upsetting one of the premier Division 2 teams in the state would certainly end Beverly’s season on a high note. The Panthers had no such luck and their winning streak came to a screeching halt as Caroline Stewart and her now 19-1 Masconomet team thwarted Beverly and took home the invitational championship with a 64-36 win.Stewart’s performance exemplified why she is truly an elite player. The senior scored a game-high 17 points, pulled down 13 rebounds, dished out four assists, and had five steals and two blocks.”As I’m watching Stewart play, a couple of times I looked over at my assistant and just shook my head,” said Beverly coach Matt Smith. “When you play a kid like that, there really isn’t much you can do.”Stewart’s stellar play earned her tournament Most Valuable Player honors for the second consecutive year. Since the tournament’s inception in 1998, only Stewart and Peabody’s D’Yana Delpero (2001-02) have won back-to-back MVPs. Later in the evening, St. John’s Prep’s Ryan O’Connell became the third player, and first male, to repeat as tournament MVP.”She’s been dominant on the North Shore, and now people are starting to notice statewide,” said Chieftains coach Bob Romeo.Masco got off to a torrid start. The Chieftains outscored the Panthers 27-10 in the first quarter, and although this scoring pace slowed after the opening eight minutes, Masco still outscored its opponents in every quarter.Along with Stewart, game MVP Jaime White (9 points) set the tone for the Chieftains. The junior scored eight points in the first half while also compiling three assists, two boards and two steals. Junior Krissy DiBenedetto (15 points) scored a game-high 10 points before intermission, and Annie Burns had six when Masco entered the break with a 37-17 advantage.”If they’re not the best Division 2 team in the state, they’re the best in eastern Massachusetts,” Smith said.Despite trailing from the opening moments forward, Beverly still received strong efforts from Meghan Chatellier, who finished with a team-high 10 points, and Alexandria Vavladellis, who scored seven to go along with eight rebounds. Vavladellis took home game MVP honors for the Panthers. The All-Tournament team featured the Chieftains’ Stewart, White and DiBenedetto, as well as Beverly’s Vavladellis and Kellie Shea, and Danielle Sherry of Danvers. In the consolation game, Danvers defeated Bishop Fenwick, 62-60. The loss will keep the Crusaders from advancing to the state tournament.Danielle Sherry accounted for half the Falcons’ offense with 31 points. The Crusaders needed the win to qualify for the tournament, but they had no answer for Sherry. Danvers (12-8) trailed in the first quarter by 11 points, but the Falcons picked up the defensive effort and it paid off. Sherry had a couple of big free throws down the stretch to help ice the win.
