The English boys basketball team had a challenge on its hands Sunday in the final game of the regular season, playing host to one of the top-ranked teams in Eastern Mass. in Lowell.The Bulldogs played well at times, but had no answer for the Red Raiders, who delivered English a rare loss, 71-40, at the Cavanagh Field House.”They came out on fire,” English coach Buzzy Barton said. “We had no answer for them at the beginning of the game.”Lowell ran out to a 25-8 lead after one quarter and extended that gap to 41-19 at halftime. The Bulldogs (17-3) cut the lead to 54-38 after three but scored only two points in the final eight minutes.Justin Young had 12 points to lead English while Rafael Perez added 11.Salem 79, Haverhill 47At Salem, the Witches (14-5) used a 21-point second quarter to break the game open. Antonio Reyes had 24 points and eight rebounds to lead Salem. Junior Lugo and Chris Maxson added 15 points each, with Maxson having seven rebounds and five assists.GIRLS BASKETBALLWilliams 65, Winthrop 59At the Comcast Tournament at BC High, the Vikings (15-4) trailed by 18 early in the fourth quarter before nearly pulling off a miraculous comeback.Courtney Finn went wild in the fourth, scoring the bulk of her 30 points, to cut the lead to four, but the Vikings couldn’t get all the way back. Finn was named the tournament MVP.Barnstable beat the Vikings by 23 in the consolation game Sunday.
