LYNN – The Lynn Tech hockey team came into it’s season finale on Friday at Connery Rink against Nashoba Tech with a 6-14 record, an improvement over last season for the Tigers. And for two periods on Friday, Tech played right with the Vikings. But in the third, inconsistencies that have plagued Tech all season reared up and bit them again, as Nashoba scored twice to pull away for a 5-2 win.”We can’t control the puck and that’s been a problem for us all season,” Tech coach Tim Serino said. “I thought that we were a better team than them (Friday) but their goaltender (David Hoffman) was incredible.”Serino wasn’t far off in his analysis of Hoffman’s play. Several times in the third period, after Nashoba had pulled away, the Tigers has glorious chances to get back in the game. But Hoffman was there at every turn to keep Tech at arms length.”He made a lot of saves that, frankly, should have been goals,” Serino said. “He was on fire. The game began with both teams playing with an edge, combining for eight penalties and several booming hits along the boards.Nashoba struck first on the power play at 4:01 when Derek Bellino took an Andrew Moran pass and beat James Wall from in close to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, the Vikes doubled the lead as Ricky Marshall, who would be a pest all game to Tech, converted off a David Keefe rebound at 6:33.Tech had a pair of power play opportunities of its own in the opening frame, but failed to convert and headed to the locker room down a pair of goals and also down a defenseman when Jim Hannaford was injured late in the period.”Losing Hannaford early didn’t help us,” Serino said. “He is probably our best 1-on-1 guy.”The rough play continued into the second period, despite a very loud speech from Serino to his team in the first intermission, as five more penalties were called. The Tigers were guilty of two of them in a stretch of a little over a minute late in the period, giving Nashoba a 2-man advantage. Marshall made Tech pay for the penalties as he was set up by Bellino at 10:14 to make it 3-0.Five seconds later, however, the Vikings began to make mistakes as Bellino was called for hooking. It took Tech just 18 seconds to strike as Jesse Wilkins fired home a Justin Colontuoni rebound to get the Tigers on the board.Nashoba would continue to inflict wounds on itself as Moran was sent off for tripping with just over three minutes left on the clock. And once again, the Tigers went on the prowl.Chris Jones rang the left post with a shot from the right circle. The rebound came back to Russ Quealy at the left point for a shot that Colontuoni tipped past Hoffman to make it 3-2 exiting the second.”The game got chippy at a point and our guys were the one’s who backed down,” Serino said. “We gained our composure in the second and were able to play hockey while Nashoba was running around at people.”The Vikings, however, stole any momentum Tech might have had right back in the first minute of the third. Marshall and Bellino again helped set up a goal, with defenseman Moran on the back end of the play that made it 4-2.Kyle Jones increased the gap to 5-2 just under four minutes later to close out the scoring. But for Serino, there was some silver lining in the final game of the year as the Tigers will return the bulk of their roster for at least the next two seasons.”This is the youngest and best team I’ve coached since I’ve been here,” Serino said. “And that’s going to leave this program in good standing for the next couple of years.”
